Special Education, Summer School Aide

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Primary

Purpose:

To assist and support the classroom teacher and to provide effective direct instruction to special needs students in a positive teaching-learning environment and in a variety of instructional settings during the ESY program.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Major

Responsibilities and Duties:

* Cooperatively perform tasks under the supervision of assigned certified professional employees in a variety of instructional settings.

* Provide assistance to teachers and related service personnel in preparing and implementing instructional curriculum, and daily classroom routines.

* Work with individual students and with groups as directed.

* Anticipate the needs of the teacher(s) and students to maximize instructional time on task.

* Assist in testing routines including data collection and criterion-referenced assessments.

* Operate, store, and use educational media, computers and equipment as directed, including special lifting devices.

* Engage in activities, which promote positive communication and understanding school and community.

* Participate in in-service training workshops as required by the District, principal or designee (i.e. academic instruction, crisis management, compliance training, lifting techniques, etc.).

* Appropriately manage students physically, verbally, and non-verbally who may be out of control, working collaboratively with the instructional team.

* Provide or assist students to manage activities of daily living (i.e. toileting, changing, diapering, eating, and positioning).

* Keep data and compile records as assigned.

* Other duties as assigned by the supervisor or designee.

EXPERIENCE:

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education /Certification/

Minimum Experience:

* High School Diploma or G.E.D.

* Title 1 Funded Campus: 48 semester hours of college coursework from a regionally accredited college or university OR meets NCLB requirements for Highly Qualified Paraprofessionals

* Non-Title 1 Funded Campus: 30 semester hours of college coursework from a regionally accredited college or university OR three years full-time work related experience with special needs students in an instructional or child care facility

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

* Constructive and cooperative attitude toward the duties of the aide, the school, the staff and the students

* Ability to communicate effectively and positively both verbally and non-verbally

* Ability to read, write, and implement instructions designated by teachers/supervisors in order to fully implement student IEPs

* Ability to follow directives and perform tasks necessary to ensure the safety of students at all times

* Ability to change diapers, feed and care for children ages 3-21 who may have significant physical and mental disabilities

* Ability to work with students who demonstrate emotional, social, and behavioral difficulties

* Willingness to attend training to obtain certification in the District's crisis prevention and management program

Heavy lifting (45 pounds or over with assistance or with a lifting device), Heavy carrying (45 pounds or over with assistance or lifting device), Reaching above shoulders, Walking (2 to 4 hours per day), Use of fingers (record keeping, typing, writing, computer), Standing (80% of the day), Repeated bending (50% of the day), Specific visual requirements (activity sufficient for reading/writing and supervising students), Specific hearing requirements (take verbal directions, listen to determine and respond to students' needs, activity sufficient to monitor children's safety), Traveling to many settings on/or off campus
* ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
Outside and inside (classroom, community and recreational sites including swimming), Microwaves, Sunlight exposure, Work with hands in water
