Purpose:

Provide leadership and expertise to the special education department in the assigned area of supporting the special education appraisal process. Provide leadership, mentoring, and support to district educational diagnosticians and ARD specialists. Provide guidance, support, and training on special education and district operating guidelines to campus administrators and other district stakeholders. Implement the special education appraisal process. Evaluate the educational, learning styles, and program needs of students referred to special education services.

Provide diagnostic information and work cooperatively with instructional personnel to provide the most appropriate programs for students with disabilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Major Responsibilities and Duties

1. Assist educational diagnosticians and ARD specialists in the handling of day-to-day challenges related to the assignment and act as a resource for staff.

2. Recommend to the Coordinators/Director materials that need to be ordered and distribute these materials to the department.

3. Assist with assigning and providing assistance to department contract staff as needed.

4. Assist in maintaining an accurate inventory of the department materials.

5. Draft caseload and evaluation assignments for educational diagnosticians and ARD specialists for administrative approval for implementation.

6. Monitor approved caseloads and recommended adjustments to administration as needed.

7. Conduct department meetings and attend relevant school district and professional meetings as necessary.

8. Assist department administrators with the development and interpretation of policies and procedures.

9. Assist with the development procedures and processes that enhance the operating guidelines.

10. Remain informed on educational innovations and trends related to educational assessments.

11. Serve in the supporting role of educational diagnostician.

12. Participate in the Individual Educational Program (IEP) to assist with the interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and development of IEPs for students according to district procedures.

13. Assist the administrators in coordinating program needs

14. Assure compliance with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rules, local school board policy, and district and department guidelines.

15. Receive student referrals and implement the appraisal process.

16. Select and administer formal and informal evaluations to determine student eligibility for special education services according to federal and state regulations.

17. Collect and organize relevant evaluation data from students' cumulative folders, classroom teachers, principal, support staff, parents, and outside resources.

18. Conduct classroom observation and personal interviews.

19. Participate in the IEP team with interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and development of IEPs for students according to district procedures.

20. Provide district-wide and campus training and professional development for district staff, including all assessment staff, ARD Specialists, teachers, and paraprofessionals, on specific topics related to assessment/evaluation, understanding students with disabilities, and IEP implementation.

21. Consult parents concerning the educational needs of students and the interpretation of evaluation data.

22. Consult parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant individuals to enhance their work with students.

23. Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students, parents, and staff members.

24. Assist in the selection of evaluation materials and equipment.

25. Assist in developing and coordinating continuing evaluation of the assessment program and make changes based on findings.

26. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.

27. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy in the areas of evaluation, placement, and planning for special education services.

28. Comply with all district and local campus routines and regulations.

29. Participate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignments.

30. Attendance at work is an essential function.

31. Perform other duties as assigned.

32. Promote and model collaboration between special education staff and district and campus staff.

33. Provide care and protection of district property and account for all equipment issued.

34. Encourage two-way communication between the district and the community.

35. Respond to parent/staff concerns in a professional and timely manner.

36. Encourage and promote parental and community involvement in the educational process.
