The Veterans Service Officer meets with individual Veterans to ascertain needs, potential eligibilities, and the process needed to obtain benefits. They advocate for Veterans and their supporting agencies, promote services, coordinate Veteran Observances, provide on‑site service, represent the office at speaking engagements, and support emergency management during disasters.
Key Responsibilities- Meet with and assess individual Veterans to determine eligibility and benefits processes.
- Advocate for Veterans with state and federal agencies including the Veterans Administration and the Texas Veterans Commission.
- Promote the services of the Veterans Service Office through outreach to Veterans’ and civic organizations.
- Plan and coordinate Veteran Observances honoring Veterans and Surviving Spouses.
- Travel to permanent or temporary locations to provide services throughout the county.
- Represent the Veterans Service Office at off‑site speaking engagements and educate Veterans and Spouses on benefits.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
- Assist Veterans with form completion and data collection.
- Participate in emergency management activities during local disasters as directed by county managers.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
- Two (2) years of job‑related experience.
- Four (4) years of military service with any branch of the Armed Services and an honorable discharge.
- Experience with the Texas Veterans Commission, Veterans Administration, Disabled Veterans of America, or similar Veterans benefits programs preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Proficiency in Veteran Benefits Management System (VBMS) and Vet Pro.
- Excellent interpersonal and public‑relations skills, with the ability to interact effectively with the public, employees, and elected officials.
- Strong organizational skills, capable of multitasking and meeting deadlines.
- Ability to present to small and large groups.
- Must maintain certification from the Texas Veterans Commission and obtain 40 hours of training certification from the National Association of County Service Officers within the first year of employment.
- Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License.
Starting salary range: $22.96 – $28.70 hourly, based on qualifications. All full‑time and part‑time employees are members of the Texas County District Retirement System (TCDRS). Full‑time employees also enjoy a broad range of benefits.
