JOB DESCRIPTION:
Primary
Purpose:
Provide specialized services to students at risk for alcohol and drug abuse.
Major Responsibilities and Duties Counseling and Intervention
- Provide intervention and individual and group chemical dependency counseling to students, family members, or significant others.
- Consult with teachers and relevant staff concerning student referrals, drug abuse prevention, and identification of students at risk.
- Provide staff development training in assigned schools on early identification of student alcohol and drug involvement and intervention issues and serve as a consultant on drug abuse prevention and substance abuse topics for instructors in the school health program.
- Develop and implement a drug education program working cooperatively with health services and counseling staff to integrate into the curriculum.
- Present drug awareness programs to parents, teachers, and students.
- Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of drug abuse prevention services and intervention and make changes based on findings.
- Identify alcohol and drug treatment resources for students and parents and work closely with community agencies to increase awareness of access to resources.
- Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required, including confidential client records.
- Comply with federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy.
- Comply with all district and local campus routines and regulations.
Other duties as assigned. - Attendance at work is an essential function.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor or designee.
EXPERIENCE:
- Two years of supervised counseling experience working with chemically dependent individuals preferred
- Valid Texas chemical dependency counselor license (LCDC) granted by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS)
- Eligible for coverage under the District's vehicle insurance program
Skills:
- Knowledge of child development, with emphasis on adolescent needs
- Ability to provide substance abuse treatment and education
- Ability to work effectively with students and manage their behavior
- Ability to present to groups of students and adults
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Working Conditions:
Mental/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Prolonged sitting; frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; frequent walking. Light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds), works inside/outside, prolonged or irregular hours, occasional district wide travel, ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
