Position: Specification Writer I

Responsibilities

A Specification Writer I works with clients, building envelope architects, and senior staff to develop technical three-part CSI Format and outline specifications, prepare project manuals, and work with the project team, assisting with product selections. Coordinate with project teams to accurately identify and specify all building components clearly, correctly, consistently, and completely using company and industry formats. Present a positive customer service attitude and understanding of ECS Core Values.

  • Assist project teams in researching product materials and manufacturers for architectural projects. Provide guidance to architectural design firms on product selection and other design considerations.
  • Review drawings and other project information to write and edit specifications for projects and coordinate compliance with project requirements, institutional guidelines, firm standards, technical conditions, acceptable standards, and existing laws, rules, regulations, and codes.
  • Perform edits, assemble project manuals in PDF format, print and format specifications for all disciplines. Use and follow company formats and practices.
  • Coordinate with project teams to avoid duplications and omissions.
  • Maintain awareness of evolving building technology, stay current on product developments, new materials, code changes, and industry trends to bring expertise to the project teams concerning product selections.
  • Assist construction administration staff with the review of product submittals and evaluate substitution requests and make recommendations regarding compliance with specifications.
  • Basic ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, produce results within a deadline, and work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Attend project discussions with clients and follow up on reports as necessary.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 0 years of related experience. Prior experience working with an architecture, engineering, or construction firm is highly desirable
  • High school diploma or GED required. Bachelor's in Architecture, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, Building Science or related field is preferred.
  • Membership in Construction Specifications Institute (CSI). CDT Certification is a plus.
  • If driving for, or on behalf of, any ECS subsidiary, a valid driver's license is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including excellent spelling and grammar and strong proofreading and note taking skills.
  • Dependable, self-motivated, responsible, and detail-oriented with outstanding organizational skills.
  • Ability to work and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Good knowledge of architectural design, engineering coordination, products, construction methodology, design trends, building systems, and manufacturer-supplier appropriateness.
  • Possess a good design aptitude. Basic proficiency in reading construction drawings, programs, criteria documents, details, and specifications.
  • Ability to work effectively in teams, with clients, peers, and subordinates, as well as independently.
  • Basic problem-solving ability to develop practical and innovative solutions for the built environment.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, Adobe, Bluebeam & Microsoft Office programs. Experience with ARCOM/AVITRU, (AIA Master Specs), and Visi Spec is a plus.
  • Basic marketing skills and ability to manage and develop new clients.
  • Ability to attend meetings at various office, field, and construction sites.
  • Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment up to 35 lbs.
  • Ability to drive and safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to travel out of town and overnight as workload and projects require.

The expected pay range for this role and location is $33.50-$39.50/hour. The final agreed-upon compensation will be determined based on specific location and other individual qualifications.
