Job Description – Party Chief Responsibilities

  • Operates survey instruments required to perform surveys as directed by the Field Survey Manager.
  • Abides by safety requirements.
  • Applies traffic control and safety procedures for a variety of surveying and construction operations.
  • Maintains and cleans a variety of surveying tools and equipment.
  • Operates, checks, and performs basic field adjustments on transits, total stations, total electronic station, data collectors, levels, compasses, tribrachs, and tripods.
  • Applies trigonometry, geometry, algebra, coordinate geometry, and basic surveying computations.
  • Uses hand‑held calculators to perform calculations.
  • Demonstrates lot, area, and intersection (bearing‑bearing, distance‑distance, bearing‑distance) computations.
  • Reduces and checks field notes to determine positions and elevations.
  • Implements principles of leveling, traversing, triangulation, trilateration, public land surveys, metes‑and‑bounds surveys, construction surveys, and photo‑control surveys.
  • Facilitates field work for standard types of surveys under the direction of the Field Survey Manager.
  • Identifies sources of measurement errors.
  • Applies principles of staking and marking.
  • Maintains neat and orderly field notes for standard surveying operations.
  • Enters field data and produces positional information using hand‑held calculators or micro‑computer software.
  • Interprets control point records and data sheets and locates points in the field.
  • Reads and prepares plans including site plans, boundary plans, highway plans, profile and cross sections, horizontal and vertical curves, pipeline plans, foundation plans, and contour development.
  • Applies basic drafting terminology and principles.
  • Observes surveying ethics and technical standards.
  • Demonstrates professional responsibility in attire, honesty, and respect for personal property.
  • Recommends and practices efficient work methods.
  • Records accurate time spent on projects with detailed descriptions.
  • Follows company policies and safety manual procedures, using all personal safety equipment.
  • Performs field survey activities in accordance with state statutes and the American Congress of Surveying and Mapping standards.
  • Plans daily activities for multiple projects to meet productivity goals set by Project Managers.
  • Coordinates photographs during field operations.
  • Performs vehicle and equipment inventory, loading, and maintenance.
  • Requests external equipment, procedural changes, new equipment purchases, and vehicle maintenance from the Field Survey Manager.
  • Communicates with office staff about all project aspects.
  • Works independently and makes technical and supervisory decisions within authority limits.
  • Downloads data from the Data Collector daily.
  • Prepares daily timesheets, data logs, expense reports, and field change orders.
  • Provides input to the Project Manager and Group Leader for performance evaluation.
  • Participates in Survey Department training.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • 3 years of relevant field experience.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to all types of weather.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills when collaborating with other crews.
Compensation
  • Salary Range: $30 per hour to $55 per hour.

  • Trimble, GPS R‑12, Robotic S‑7 and a Data Collector TSC
