As the Principal Engineer, you will lead the Geotechnical Department, overseeing engineers, geologists, and environmental specialists. You will be responsible for both technical excellence and operational leadership, ensuring successful project delivery while growing the department and supporting company‑wide goals.
What You’ll Do- Lead and manage the geotechnical and environmental department, including team growth and revenue development
- Establish and maintain department KPIs, develop solutions, and ensure performance goals are met
- Foster a collaborative environment that promotes teamwork and an inclusive culture
- Perform and oversee geotechnical engineering analyses for infrastructure projects, dams and levees, bridges, hospitals, schools, and vertical construction
- Coordinate and mentor staff performing subsurface investigations and field operations
- Prepare and review cost estimates, schedules, and technical reports
- Develop innovative solutions for complex and unconventional geotechnical challenges
- Mentor staff in construction observation activities, including grading, foundation preparation, pile installation, and tie‑back systems
- Collaborate with internal departments, clients, contractors, and stakeholders throughout all project phases
- Support business development efforts and work closely with marketing to achieve annual growth goals
- Travel up to 25% to project sites, client offices, and branch locations

- A communicator who can effectively engage with clients, stakeholders, and internal teams
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (required)
- Master’s Degree in Geotechnical Engineering (preferred)
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required (California)
- Geotechnical Engineer (GE) license preferred (or actively pursuing in California)
- Proven senior management experience, including:
- Department capacity planning
- KPI development and performance tracking
- Supporting revenue growth through marketing/business development collaboration
- Strong knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles, including:
- Foundation systems
- Levees and dams
- Soil behavior and subsurface conditions
- Experience managing mid-size teams and complex project workloads
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong client focus
- Proficiency in standard office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Field engineering background including boring logs, soils classification, settlement analysis, slope stability, foundation recommendations, and support of geotechnical investigations (field & office)
- Comfortable working with clients, contractors, design professionals, field and office teams
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and solve complex challenges
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, geotechnical software, Adobe, and email systems
