the city of roseville is looking for a building plans examiner to join our development services team. Whether you're an experienced plans examiner or have a background in architectural design, drafting, or engineering and are interested in applying that experience to plan review, we'd like to hear from you.

our plans examiners work on a diverse range of projects and do more than review construction documents for code compliance. They work directly with architects, engineers, contractors, developers, property owners, and other city departments to solve technical challenges, provide clear code guidance, and help projects successfully navigate the permitting process.

we're looking for someone who is technically curious, enjoys problem solving, communicates well, and shares our commitment to providing excellent customer service while maintaining building and life-safety standards.

what the city of roseville offers:

  • $34.95 - $54.09 hourly (dependent on experience)
  • up to $2,490 per month toward health and welfare benefits
  • additional certification incentive pay for qualifying certifications:
    • 2.5% — certified access specialist (casp)
    • 2.5% — certified building official (cbo)
    • 1.5% — icc combination plans examiner (c3)
  • long-term service incentive: 2.5% of annual base salary beginning in the 10th year and 5% beginning in the 15th year for eligible employees
  • 3% city deferred compensation contribution after five years of service
  • 45 hours of personal leave annually, with a cash-out option

the employment list that will be established from this recruitment may be utilized to fill future regular, limited-term, and temporary vacancies. The current vacancy is a regular full-time position.

collaborate with architects, engineers, contractors, developers, property owners, and city staff to resolve code and design issues and identify code-compliant solutions.

provide responsive, solution-oriented customer service by clearly communicating code requirements and helping applicants understand the path to code compliance.

review residential and commercial construction documents for compliance with applicable building codes and city requirements.

experience and training

experience:

  • one year of increasingly responsible building plan examination, architectural design, drafting, and/or inspection experience.

and

training:

  • completion of thirty units from an accredited college or university with major course work in engineering, architecture or a related field. (note: possession of a valid i.c.c certificate as a building plans examiner can substitute for the thirty units from an accredited college or university.)

license or certificate

  • possession of a valid i.c.c. Certificate as a building plans examiner is required within one year of appointment to the position.
