job overview:
the plant mechanical engineer oversees the mechanical engineering needs of our detroit, mi can manufacturing plant. This position provides mechanical engineering expertise to support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of production equipment and processes.
the plant mechanical engineer will learn existing and new manufacturing processes and equipment to provide technical support and assist with troubleshooting when needed. This position will work closely with production and maintenance personnel to improve equipment reliability, minimize downtime, and support preventative and corrective maintenance activities.
the position will establish and maintain a critical spare parts program and recommended spare parts lists for production equipment. The plant mechanical engineer will also work closely with the technical center and other engineering resources on equipment upgrades, process improvements, and special projects for the facility.
duties and responsibilities:
- provide mechanical engineering expertise and technical support to production, maintenance, engineering, and project teams.
- troubleshoot mechanical equipment and process problems, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions to minimize downtime.
- work closely with maintenance personnel to improve equipment reliability and support preventative and corrective maintenance activities.
- establish and maintain critical spare parts lists for production lines and key manufacturing equipment.
- participate in the planning, engineering, installation, modification, and improvement of manufacturing equipment.
- work with the technical center, vendors, contractors, and other engineering resources on plant projects and process improvements.
- review and maintain mechanical drawings, equipment documentation, procedures, and sops as needed.
- provide technical guidance and training to maintenance and production personnel on mechanical equipment and troubleshooting.
- identify opportunities to improve equipment safety, reliability, efficiency, and productivity.
- perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
qualifications and skills:
- bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
- experience working in a manufacturing environment, preferably with high-speed production equipment.
- strong mechanical troubleshooting, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- working knowledge of industrial machinery, mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, power transmission, bearings, motors, and related manufacturing equipment.
- experience with equipment installation, modification, or improvement projects preferred.
- experience with autocad or similar computer-aided design software preferred.
- ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, equipment layouts, schematics, and technical documentation.
- strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with production, maintenance, engineering, vendors, and contractors.
- self-motivated, organized, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
