Job Summary
The Accountant reports directly to the Controller and will supports the day-to-day accounting operations of the organization and assists in maintaining accurate and timely financial records. This entry-level position is responsible for supporting general ledger activities, preparing journal entries, performing account reconciliations, assisting with transaction processing, and supporting the monthly and year-end close processes.
The Accountant will work closely with members of the Accounting and Finance teams to ensure financial transactions are recorded accurately and in accordance with organizational policies, generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), internal controls, and applicable nonprofit accounting requirements.
This position is for an individual who is detail-oriented, organized, analytical, and eager to build a strong foundation in nonprofit accounting.
Duties and Responsibilities- Prepare and record journal entries accurately and timely.
- Assist with monthly, quarterly, and year-end close activities.
- Prepare account reconciliations and investigate and resolve discrepancies.
- Assist with the reconciliation of balance sheet and general ledger accounts.
- Review financial transactions and supporting documentation for accuracy and completeness.
- Assist with accounts payable and accounts receivable activities as needed.
- Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation in accordance with organizational policies and procedures.
- Assist with bank, credit card, and other account reconciliations.
- Support the preparation and maintenance of schedules and roll-forwards.
- Assist with fixed asset accounting and depreciation schedules as assigned.
- Assist with the review of the general ledger for accuracy and completeness.
- Support internal and external audit requests by preparing schedules and gathering supporting documentation.
- Assist with the preparation of financial reports and analyses for management.
- Help ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, organizational policies, and applicable nonprofit accounting requirements.
- Participate in process improvement initiatives and special projects.
- Develop knowledge of the organization's accounting systems, processes, funding structure, and financial reporting requirements.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
- Zero to two years of accounting or finance experience preferred.
- Internship or relevant accounting experience is a plus.
- Experience in a nonprofit organization is preferred but not required.
- Understanding of basic accounting principles and GAAP.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Experience with an ERP or general ledger accounting system preferred.
- Net Suite experience is a plus.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Excellent organizational and time‑management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet established deadlines.
- Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as a member of a team.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to handle confidential financial information in a discreet and professional manner.
- Willingness and ability to learn new accounting processes, systems, and nonprofit accounting requirements.
- Familiarity with internal controls and audit procedures.
- CPA candidate or interest in pursuing professional accounting certification is a plus.
