Tax Director / Senior Tax Manager – High-Net-Worth Clients

A well-established CPA firm is seeking an experienced Senior Tax Manager or Tax Director to join its high-net-worth tax practice as part of a planned partner succession.

This is not simply another tax compliance position. A long-standing partner is planning to retire in 2027, creating an opportunity for the right tax professional to transition into responsibility for an established book of high-net-worth clients.

The incoming professional will work alongside the retiring partner to learn the clients, understand their tax situations, build relationships, and create a smooth transition of the client base.

For an experienced tax professional who wants greater client ownership and a clear path toward becoming a senior leader within a CPA firm, this represents a unique opportunity to step into something that has already taken years to build.

High-Net-Worth Client Focus

The practice serves sophisticated high-net-worth individuals and families with complex tax situations. Individual tax returns can include 50–100 K-1s, requiring someone who is comfortable working with significant pass-through activity, investments, partnerships, and other complex tax matters.

The work goes well beyond preparing an individual tax return. These clients need an experienced tax advisor who understands their overall financial picture and can provide proactive guidance throughout the year.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and review complex federal and state individual income tax returns for high-net-worth clients
  • Oversee returns involving significant K-1 activity, including individuals receiving 50–100 K-1s
  • Manage relationships with high-net-worth individuals and families
  • Provide proactive year-round tax planning and advisory services
  • Analyze partnership, S corporation, investment, trust, and other pass-through tax activity
  • Coordinate estimated tax calculations and tax projections
  • Identify planning opportunities and potential tax exposures
  • Communicate complex tax matters clearly and confidently to clients
  • Work directly with the retiring partner to transition existing client relationships
  • Develop a thorough understanding of each client's tax situation, entities, investments, and planning needs
  • Review work prepared by other members of the tax team
  • Mentor and develop tax professionals within the firm
  • Become the primary point of contact for an established group of clients as the succession progresses
Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will currently be a Senior Tax Manager, Tax Director, experienced Tax Manager, or newer Partner within a CPA firm and have significant experience serving high-net-worth individuals. We are particularly interested in someone who has already developed the judgment and client presence necessary to become a trusted advisor.

Preferred Experience
  • CPA strongly preferred
  • Significant public accounting tax experience
  • Strong background in high-net-worth individual taxation
  • Experience reviewing complex individual income tax returns
  • Experience with returns containing significant numbers of K-1s
  • Strong understanding of partnerships, S corporations, investments, trusts, and pass-through entities
  • Experience providing tax planning in addition to tax compliance
  • Demonstrated ability to personally manage important client relationships
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work directly with sophisticated high-net-worth individuals and families
  • Leadership and staff-development experience
What Makes This Opportunity Different

The biggest differentiator is succession. Rather than joining a firm and spending years trying to develop a book of business from scratch, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work directly with an established partner and gradually assume responsibility for an existing high-net-worth client base.

The partner's planned 2027 retirement provides time for an orderly transition rather than simply handing clients to someone after the partner leaves. The goal is continuity. Clients should become comfortable with their future advisor while the retiring partner is still actively involved, allowing the incoming professional to establish…
