Functions under the direction of the clinical coordinator and/or department manager. The interventional special procedures technologist assists with providing safe, age‑appropriate care to the patient by performing all exams provided by the department according to department procedures. The technologist has the knowledge and ability to properly and safely obtain a quality diagnostic study. He/she is responsible for performing a wide variety of technical procedures requiring independent judgment, ingenuity and initiative in the utilization of the equipment for the diagnosis and/or treatment of diseases.
The technologist is able to independently perform job functions. He/she sets up the equipment to provide imaging service and positions patient for the procedure. Able to perform procedures in both the IR and vascular hybrid interventional procedural setting.

- Work in conjunction with radiologists, vascular surgeons, cardiologists
- Prep the patient for procedure
- Demonstrate and understand sterile technique
- Prepare necessary supplies and equipment for procedure
- Enter appropriate charges for supplies and procedure (SIM CODES)
- Verify patient two patient identifiers (e.g., armband, DOB, verbal identification)
- Verify front of patient chart for same/similar name sticker
- Verify written order and consent, seek clarification if order or consent unclear
- Use and understand pre‑procedural verification/time‑out form
- Understand and comply with site/side marking when indicated
- Be flexible with hours to meet departmental needs
- Work scheduled and on‑call as required
- Know existing lines of communication and authority
- Handle communications properly
- Introduce self to patient and/or guardian using proper scripting (e.g., AIDET)
- Transport patients as needed
- Provide privacy and comfort for patient/customers
- Assist with maintenance of departmental records, Joint Commission standards, State and Federal Regulations, and performance improvement
- Complete necessary paperwork
- Answer departmental phone using proper scripting
- Maintain stock levels and inventory
- Maintain current license and BLS certifications
- Assist in service/training for other medical imaging staff as appropriate
- Work as a team with other VI staff to obtain the best possible outcome
- Perform any other duties as needed when asked by leadership
- Be responsible for patient, family/support system education
- Provide post‑procedural home‑care instructions as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Comply with all Well Star Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct
Minimum Education
- Graduate of AMA‑approved School of Radiology Technology.
- Minimum 1 year experience in Interventional Special Procedures setting in either IR and/or vascular hybrid setting.
- Function independently during procedures after appropriate orientation/competency on unit and as demonstrated by being placed on call rotation.
- Competency in all aspects of interventional/vascular procedures, patient positioning, exposure factors and radiation protection.
- Required special/advanced procedure registry as outlined above.
- Understanding of anatomy and pathology and how they affect the quality of a procedure.
- Communicate and understand verbal and written English and display a positive attitude.
