Systems Administrator, Lead –

Georgia State University’s Instructional Innovation and Technology (IIT) division is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Systems Administrator, Lead to provide technical leadership for the design, deployment, and lifecycle management of research computing infrastructure. The role is primarily responsible for the architecture and operation of high‑performance storage and networking systems, including distributed storage platforms and scale‑out NAS.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design, deploy, and manage enterprise storage and networking solutions that support data‑intensive and high‑performance research.
  • Provide technical leadership for research computing infrastructure to ensure scalable, reliable, and high‑performance services.
  • Align infrastructure architecture and standards with evolving research and institutional needs.
  • Design tiered storage strategies for home, project, scratch, and object storage, and optimize performance for research workloads.
  • Implement quotas, replication, lifecycle management, and disaster recovery capabilities while supporting POSIX and S3‑compatible access.
  • Enhance, modify, test, analyze and adapt existing systems across multiple platforms and tools, including virtual infrastructure tools, Kubernetes, HPC clusters, network infrastructure, and observability platforms.
  • Resolve complex system issues to maintain service stability and availability, including capacity planning and incident response.
  • Produce and maintain clear technical documentation and procedures to support IT tools and solutions across platforms.
  • Implement secure infrastructure practices aligned with research data compliance requirements (e.g., NIST 800‑171).
  • Support identity and access integration with institutional systems, ensuring secure communication, auditing, and monitoring capabilities.
  • Deliver infrastructure solutions that expand or improve research computing capabilities.
  • Increase operational efficiency through automation and standardized deployment practices.
  • Ensure computing, storage, and networking systems are consistently configured and maintainable across platforms.
  • Identify and assess emerging technologies that can advance research computing capabilities.
  • Collaborate with researchers, cyberinfrastructure facilitators, and IT teams to identify and support computational research needs.
  • Mentor system administrators and contribute to technical planning for research initiatives.
  • Participate in regional or national research computing collaborations.

Requirements:

  • Hands‑on experience working in LINUX and High‑Performance Computing environments.
  • Some level of scripting/coding knowledge.
  • Understanding of scientific computing workloads and needs.
  • Practical expertise in designing, deploying, and maintaining large‑scale distributed storage systems and network infrastructure.
  • Experience debugging issues related to networking and storage systems.

Minimum Hiring

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and three years of related experience, or a combination of education and related experience.

Preferred Hiring

Qualifications:

  • Hands‑on experience with distributed high‑performance storage systems.
  • Hands‑on experience with networking systems, such as ethernet and Infini Band.
  • Hands‑on experience with computing systems and observability platforms.
  • Experience with implementing, maintaining, and complying with security standards, such as NIST 800‑171.
  • Experience working with Kubernetes, HPC Systems, and Open Stacks.
  • Hands‑on experience working with large‑scale backup solutions.
  • Experience with Cloud and AI environments.
  • Exposure to National Cyberinfrastructure.

  • On‑site work is required; remote or hybrid options are not available.
  • Background check, including comprehensive criminal and other relevant investigations, is required.
