More than 700 physicians and 300 associate practitioners work together in a unique integrated care model to provide high-quality care to Kaiser Permanente members. Our focus is on long-term health, effective prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.

The Business Intelligence Group is seeking a Consultant, Data Solutions and Analytics to design, develop, and optimize data solutions that support clinical, operational, and financial decision-making. This position partners with Business Owners, Project Managers, Business Intelligence Consultants, and Data teams to translate complex requirements into scalable datasets and high-performing data models.

The Consultant serves as a data Subject Matter Expert (SME) in SQL Server, Oracle, and Azure Databricks, providing technical expertise and consultation to ensure data solutions are accurate, trusted, performant, scalable, and well-governed. This role also provides technical support to business analysts and report developers, manages code through Git Hub, documents data models and business logic, and contributes to technical best practices with minimal to no supervision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Write, optimize, and troubleshoot complex SQL queries using T-SQL, PL/SQL, Databricks SQL, and Spark SQL across SQL Server, Oracle, and Databricks environments.
  • Develop and maintain database objects including tables, views, indexes, stored procedures, functions, Delta tables, and notebooks.
  • Work directly with SQL Server Management Studio, Oracle SQL Developer/Toad, Databricks Notebooks, Azure SQL Query Editor, Azure Data Studio, and other Azure-native tools.
  • Leverage Azure SQL Database and Databricks SQL/Spark SQL to develop scalable datasets and analytics solutions using cloud-based data sources.
  • Monitor data refreshes and validate data integrity across platforms.
  • Partner with business and clinical stakeholders to gather requirements and translate business needs into technical specifications.
  • Design and deliver curated, well-documented datasets, views, and data models optimized for analytics and self-service reporting.
  • Provide technical support, troubleshoot data issues, and consult with business analysts and report developers on query design, data usage, and best practices.
  • Maintain code in Git Hub using version control best practices, including branching, commits, pull requests, and peer code reviews.
  • Investigate data anomalies, validate results against source systems, and document data models, business rules, technical processes, data dictionaries, and entity-relationship information.
  • Identify and manage obsolete database objects, including unused tables, views, stored procedures, and notebooks, to reduce technical debt and improve system performance.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and AI-assisted development tools, including Git Hub Copilot and Databricks Assistant, and share applicable tools and best practices with team members.
  • Collaborate with Data teams on performance issues, deployments, environment refreshes, database design, security, and capacity planning.
  • Serve as a liaison between Business Reporting and Analytics Consultants and Data teams to ensure solutions are scalable, supportable, and technically sound.
  • Tune query performance, apply optimization strategies, and follow coding standards to ensure efficient and maintainable solutions.
Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Business, Statistics, Accounting, Management, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience writing and optimizing SQL, building datasets, implementing transformations, and validating data integrity across SQL Server and Oracle.
  • A minimum of 5 years of direct experience working in SQL Server Management Studio and Oracle SQL Developer/Toad, including creating and maintaining database objects such as tables, views, indexes, and stored procedures.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience using Git Hub for version control and collaborative development workflows, including branching strategies, pull requests, and code reviews.
  • Experience documenting data models, business rules, and technical processes, including entity-relationship diagrams and data dictionaries.
  • Experience auditing database environments to identify unused or obsolete objects and safely deprecating code.
  • Experience partnering with DBAs or infrastructure teams on performance tuning, deployments, or environment management.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate data issues and validate results.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate technical concepts and business requirements for a variety of stakeholders.
