Roadway Construction Materials Testing Technician (Level I/II)
Job Description
This role focuses on construction quality assurance field testing for roadway and related infrastructure projects, with an emphasis on concrete, soil, masonry, asphalt, and geosynthetics. The technician performs on-site testing, inspections, and observations to verify compliance with project specifications and applicable codes. Responsibilities
+ Perform construction quality assurance field testing of soil, concrete, masonry, asphalt, and geosynthetics on roadway and related projects.
+ Conduct on-site inspections and project-specific observations to ensure work meets plans, specifications, and applicable codes.
+ Monitor contractor activities, including earthwork, backfill, pipe installation, soils work, and concrete placement.
+ Ride job sites, check in with contractors, and verify project plans on site to confirm daily tasks and testing requirements.
+ Use specific methods to observe site activities, take samples, and perform tests such as soil compaction, soil density testing, and concrete testing.
+ Operate field and laboratory equipment, including nuclear density gauges and related testing tools, in accordance with safety and technical standards.
+ Prepare and maintain accurate daily field reports, test results, and documentation for submission to engineers and project stakeholders.
+ Work from drawings, specifications, diagrams, schematics, and detailed verbal and written instructions provided by engineers and experienced staff.
+ Assist engineers and other professionals by performing a variety of testing, site assessments, and data collection tasks.
+ Support proof rolls and "cooking dirt" procedures by preparing soil samples, using drive rings, and determining soil density and moisture content.
+ Adapt to varying schedules, including early morning, daytime, evening, and overnight concrete pours, based on project needs and weather conditions.
+ Work independently or as part of a crew, depending on job requirements, while maintaining strong communication with clients and team members.
+ Understand job specifications and plans and ensure that testing and sampling are performed at the correct locations and frequencies dictated by codes.
+ Participate in training, cross-training, and certification preparation activities to expand technical capabilities and advance within the organization.
+ Maintain dependability and flexibility in responding to schedule changes, including working additional hours or weekends when needed to make up for weather-related delays.
Essential Skills
+ High school diploma or GED.
+ Valid driver's license.
+ ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I (ACI Level 1 Field Testing) certification (must).
+ At least 2+ years of experience as a Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Roadway Testing Technician with RTT GDOT certification.
+ Strong hands-on concrete testing experience, including sampling, slump, air content, cylinders, and related field tests.
+
Experience with soil testing, including soil compaction and soil density testing, is highly preferred.
+ Ability to read and work from drawings, specifications, diagrams, schematics, and detailed instructions.
+ Capability to operate testing equipment and accurately record and report test data.
+ Comfort working outdoors on construction sites for extended periods, often in varying weather conditions.
+ Willingness and ability to travel and stay out of town for extended periods as project needs require.
+ High level of dependability and flexibility with work hours, including nights, early mornings, weekends, and varying shifts.
+ Strong communication skills to coordinate with contractors, clients, and experienced staff and to understand project specifications.
+ Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, adjusting to changing job demands day to day.
Additional
Skills & Qualifications
+ NICET certification in construction materials testing or a related discipline (nice to have).
+ RTT (Roadway Testing Technician) certification beyond the minimum requirements (nice to have).
+ GSWCC certification (Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission) (nice to have).
+ ICC certifications related to construction inspection or materials testing (nice to have).
+ OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification (nice to have).
+ Nuclear Gauge Certification for use of nuclear density gauges (nice to have).
+ Experience working in construction materials laboratories and with nuclear density gauges.
+ Experience or interest in civil construction, roadway projects, and geosynthetics testing.
