Summary
- The Curriculum Specialist develops culturally grounded Navajo Language curriculum, assessments, and instructional resources that advance student language acquisition and achievement. The Specialist builds teacher capacity through professional development, classroom observation and feedback, and support integrating new curriculum aligned to the GMCS Year at a Glance. Using teacher feedback and student data to strengthen curriculum effectiveness, the Specialist upholds the profession's Code of Ethics and all applicable district, state, and federal regulations.
Essential Function Statements
- Essential duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Apply instructional design principles to create learning objectives, develop learning activities, and design assessments that meet student needs and curriculum goals.
- Develop and enhance Navajo Language curriculum materials that support student language acquisition and proficiency, ensuring materials reflect Navajo language, culture, values, and educational goals.
- Create culturally relevant visual resources and instructional tools to support classroom learning.
- Create, edit, format, and organize curriculum resources for teacher and student use.
- Design, develop, and maintain language assessments to measure student progress, and use assessment data to monitor district performance in meeting standards and language objectives.
- Evaluate and improve curriculum effectiveness based on teacher feedback and student outcomes.
- Set curriculum goals for the areas an HLC teacher covers during the school year, aligned to the GMCS Year at a Glance.
- Deliver professional development and instructional training for HLC teachers, incorporating curriculum materials and helping teachers integrate new words, phrases, and assessments into their instruction.
- Organize and support ongoing professional learning opportunities aligned with the New Mexico Professional Development Framework and the diverse learning needs of the program.
- Observe teachers and provide feedback, making evidence-based recommendations that account for the variety of factors affecting student learning.
- Stay informed of trends in instructional methods and educational technology to provide innovative approaches, resources, and assessment strategies.
- Support the heritage language program by maintaining a culture of student achievement, high-quality instruction, and professional development that meets diverse learning needs.
- Use communication and relationship-building skills to engage the larger community in advocacy for equity in meeting the program's diverse needs.
- Develop, support, encourage, and supervise programs that lead to increased student attendance and achievement.
- Comply with the state-approved Code of Ethics of the education profession; uphold district directives and regulations, school board policies, and local, state, and federal regulations; and safeguard the confidentiality of privileged information.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Participate in the development and administration of District goals, objectives, and procedures. Interpret and apply applicable federal, state, and local policies, laws, and regulations. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, including explaining changes in curriculum or instruction to teachers, principals, and school staff. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Utilize District curriculum based on state competencies, including objectives, assessment methods, and the ordering of instructional materials.
Evaluate student performance data, teaching strategies, and curriculum materials, and make confident, informed recommendations about instructional methods and materials based on that analysis. Attend required meetings, conduct staff meetings, and participate…
