What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an Intern Summer - R&D Undergrad

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Assist with the synthesis of sputtered nanogranular composites.
  • Assist with structural, electrical, and magnetic thin film characterization.
  • Have responsibilities that include material synthesis, data collection, data analysis, and the ability to maintain a safe laboratory working environment.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

At Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited undergraduate program
  • Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, asylees or refugees in the U.S.

Note:

If you have not earned a HS diploma or equivalent, please apply to a high school intern position.

Qualifications We Desire:
  • The position would best suit a student pursuing a physics, chemistry, materials science, or similar undergraduate degree.
  • Ambition and initiative.
  • Outstanding academic performance
  • Experience working in a laboratory setting.
  • The ability to work independently and self-sufficiently as part of a larger team with high reliability and attention to detail.
  • Experience with material synthesis and/or characterization especially physical vapor deposition, x-ray diffraction, and electron microscopy.

About Our Team:

The Advanced Electronic and Optoelectronic Materials Department, 1876, is responsible for the research, development, and application of physical and chemical sciences to materials technologies critical to Sandia's missions. Our work is currently along five thrusts: (1) density functional theory (DFT) calculations to study defects in semiconductors, (2) advancing state-of-the-art growth of semiconductor epitaxial material for device applications by Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) and related growth technologies, (3) structural, electronic, and optical characterization of semiconductor and dielectric materials and interfaces, (4) growth, processing, and characterization of nanostructures such as semiconductor quantum dots, quantum wires, and 3D structures including photonic lattices, and (5) film deposition and characterization of metals and dielectrics.

We support a large variety of compound

semiconductor materials science and device development projects. We have an extensive network of partners inside and outside of Sandia.

The Department closely partners with other organizations, including the Semiconductor Material and Device Sciences Department 1873, the Advanced Thin Films and Processing Department 1875, other departments in Centers 1800 and 5200, and university and industry collaborators throughout the world. The Department makes use of state-of-the-art growth and microfabrication facilities associated with MESA (Sandia's Microsystems Engineering, Science, and Applications complex); scientific facilities at CINT (the joint Sandia / Los Alamos Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies);

and staff laboratories with specialized characterization techniques.
