SummaryThis position reports directly to the Utilities Billing Manager. This is routine work in the reading of water meters and recording the consumption. Work primarily involves reading various types of water meters and recording the readings in a handheld unit. Work may extend to the testing and minor repair of water meters and to the changing of meters. In addition, work may extend to reestablishing water service for delinquent accounts that have been brought current.
Work is performed in accordance with established routines and procedures. No supervision is given, and on meter-reading assignments only general supervision is received, primarily through a determination in the Utilities Office that readings are correct and through a lack of complaints with regard to high bills caused by reading errors. Work originates as a result of a recurring meter reading cycle.
Work involves considerable contact with the citizen-consumer public and requires substantial courtesy and tact.

- Reads water meters on an assigned route and records findings.
- Determines whether meters are functioning properly and reports any defects to a superior.
- Inspects visible plumbing for water leakage.
- May remove and replace existing defective water meters.
- May turn water meters on and off.
- Gets re-reads and final reads.
- May drive City vehicles.
- Performs related work as required.
Education, Training, and
Experience:
High school diploma or GED equivalent AND three years increasingly responsible experience in operation of a water production plant; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Knowledge of:
Geography and street locations of the City. - Ability to learn to read water meters; write legibly; make simple arithmetical computations; walk for long periods; work outdoors; drive City vehicles safely; establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public.
- Skill in:
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; verbal and written communication; operating a personal computer with standard software (e.g., Microsoft Office) and some specialized software; prioritizing and completing multiple tasks.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Class D drivers license issued by the State of New Mexico.
Work is performed throughout the city. Safety precautions must be followed.
Pre-employment Requirements- Must pass a rigid background investigation including work history, criminal records, driving records, and other records deemed necessary.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen administered by a City-designated facility.
- Must pass a pre-employment limited physical given by a City-designated physician.
- Incumbents and candidates must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record and insurability in accordance with the City's insurance carrier.
