Radiation Control Technician III – Los Alamos, NM

Position Summary

Provides radiological support at assigned laboratory sites covering workplace surveillance and analysis/interpretation of radiological data.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide fully proficient operational health physics support in the assigned facility, including high‑hazard radiological jobs.
  • Ensure compliance with radiation protection activities, procedures and 10

    CFR
    835; implement radiation protection procedures and apply them to a wide range of activities such as reviewing radiological work for proper controls, posting and compliance with laboratory requirements.
  • Assist and mentor employees in on‑the‑job training in radiation monitoring, contamination control, external exposure control, emergency response, radiation work permits, and facility design.
  • Interface with emergency personnel or directly respond to an emergency situation involving radiation or radioactive material.
  • Work with health physicist to determine appropriate re‑entry requirements and direct other RCTs in monitoring and dealing with contaminated personnel.
  • May be called upon on an as‑needed basis to assume field management responsibility and direct the actions of other technicians.
  • Follow or adhere to requirements, specifications, or procedures developed for the task.
Job Knowledge & Qualifications
  • RCT 3 considered skilled/fully proficient.
  • Apply knowledge of the job, laboratory policies, and principles to complete a wide range of tasks.
  • Complete understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories, and concepts in the field.
  • General knowledge of related disciplines.
  • Assignments usually focused within established priorities, procedures, processes, requirements or specifications.
  • Priorities and tasks usually prescribed.
  • Provide technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems.
  • Solutions imaginative, thorough, practicable, and consistent with organization objectives.
  • Impact of work usually limited to a well‑defined area.
  • Perform normal aspects of job with little or no direct supervision; general instructions given for new assignments; work reviewed for soundness of judgment and overall adequacy.
Required

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma and 2–4 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Position may be subject to DOE Order 426.2 for personnel selection, training, and qualification requirements.
Clearance and Health Requirements
  • Requires Q clearance; US citizenship required except in extremely rare circumstances.
  • Physically able to work in demanding environments; moderate physical demands such as lifting and carrying radiation protection instruments and wearing personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection.
  • Work may be outdoors and scheduled outside regular hours; may require 24/7 coverage, rotating shift/weekend schedule.
  • Routinely lift, carry, and move materials up to 50 pounds.
  • Confirm tasks visually and audibly.
  • Must stoop, kneel, bend, or crouch as required.
  • Employment contingent on passing pre‑employment physical and drug screening.
  • Subject to DOE Human Reliability Program, including ongoing drug and alcohol testing, periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
