Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Job Title
Employee is responsible for all repairs and maintenance of county road equipment and vehicles.
Examples of DutiesEssential duties and responsibilities include diagnosing problems with heavy automotive and construction equipment; determining the most effective means to repair problems with existing parts and tools. Improvise repair methods when no standard method exists, making recommendations for outside repairs when necessary. Routine servicing and preventative maintenance of assigned equipment. Employee must perform all related work as required and other duties as assigned.
This position performs under the general supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, who may provide assignments and instruction, determine objectives, priorities, and deadlines, and assists the employee with unusual situations. The employee uses initiative and judgment to perform work independently and on time according to precedents and established policies and procedures. Provides close to general supervision to six full-time and/or two part-time personnel during the absence of supervisor and is responsible for the overall day-to-day Department shop operations.
Qualifications
Education/Training/
Experience:
High school diploma or G.E.D.; four years experience in heavy gasoline and diesel powered engine repair.
Licenses/Certification:
Valid N.M. Class A CDL with a good driving record. Mobile Air Conditioning Certification or the ability to obtain said certification within six months of hire.
Desirable
Qualifications:
Vocational training with emphasis on heavy equipment repair.
Other:
Post offer Drug Analysis Test and/or pre-employment physical. Driver's license, Employment and criminal Background Investigation.
Proficiently understand diagrams and instruction in repair manuals and technical bulletins.
Working knowledge in the use of both oxyacetylene and ARC welding equipment.
Considerable knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of equipment including principals of operation. Occupational hazards and the safety precautions necessary in the automotive and equipment repair trade.
Journey level skill Must be able to complete forms and provide clear and concise records of work performed. Must have the ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform suitable repair methods.
Ability to read, write, and understand written and oral instructions; must have working knowledge of computers and/or specific programs; able to use proficiently any machines and/or tools;
Interact with occupants of the County buildings and the general public in a professional and friendly manner. Work independently using good judgment and decision making skills; work well with ever changing priorities and/or situations. Employee must know and understand County Personnel Policy as well as all County and departmental policies pertinent to the position. This position may require some out of town travel for training.
Must be able to maintain an acceptable attendance record, be punctual and meet established deadlines.
Safety requirements:
This position must comply with all safety guidelines of Chaves County.
Physical demands:
This position requires a variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, etc. Talking, hearing, and seeing essential to the performance of the job. Common eye, hand, and finger dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, and discriminating thinking. Frequent local travel required in normal course of job performance. Strength of arms, hands, legs, and back required in the performance of essential functions.
Work environment:
Exposure to weather, dust, fumes, electrical currents and machine noises. Wearing protective breathing apparatus may be required. Occasionally exposed to high work places and confined places, volatile materials, toxic materials.
