As a Senior Risk Analyst you will play an important role in safeguarding and enhancing the performance of our trading, refining, and fuel supply business. Acting as a key link between risk management and commercial teams, you will analyse complex trading positions, interpret market movements, and ensure financial performance is accurately captured and understood. In this role, you will go beyond pure reporting: you will provide insight, challenge assumptions, and actively contribute to better decision‑making.
You will work closely with traders, finance and senior management, gaining a comprehensive view of the value chain, from crude sourcing and refinery optimisation to logistics, biofuel blending and customer sales. You will also improve systems, processes and reporting capabilities, developing new analytical tools, enhancing ETRM functionality and identifying efficiencies in workflows. This is a highly visible role with regular interaction with senior stakeholders, including the VP Risk.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyse trading books to understand exposure to market price movements.
- Reconcile and attribute daily mark‑to‑market P&L movements to ensure control over financial reporting.
- Collaborate with traders to investigate unexpected P&L outcomes and help resolve discrepancies.
- Summarise and explain P&L movements over time, linking performance to positions and market developments.
- Monitor exposures against limits and Delegations of Authority.
- Develop new reports and analytical tools to generate business insights.
- Support improvements to ETRM systems, including testing new releases.
- Manage cost attributions, transfer pricing and internal charges to ensure full transparency of performance.
- Support and challenge commercial stakeholders to drive sound risk‑reward decision‑making.
- Identify improvement opportunities and implement more efficient processes and ways of working.
- Work closely with business control, performance reporting and accounting to ensure accurate P&L reporting.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar risk or product control role within commodities, oil or energy sectors.
- Understanding of accounting and financial reporting for physical commodities.
- Basic knowledge of risk metrics such as VaR and drawdown.
- Familiarity with derivatives including futures, swaps and simple options.
- Intermediate to advanced Excel skills.
- Knowledge of commodities markets, pricing and physical trading, including understanding of FX exposure and hedging.
- Analytical and structured skills, with a strong attention to detail.
- A curious mindset, willing to ask questions and challenge assumptions.
- Reliable, accurate and well‑organised.
- Proactive, motivated and a strong team player.
- Fluent in English with strong communication skills.
- Degree in a maths, scientific, engineering, business, economics or data subject.
- Understanding of biofuels markets, products and tickets.
- ETRM knowledge, especially Allegro/Horizon.
- Skill in use of SQL, Python and Power
BI to produce risk reports.
- Understanding how and why markets move and explaining these movements in terms of underlying fundamentals.
- Deep understanding of the trading book strategies, assets and trade flows to ensure accuracy in systems and reports.
- Learning about biofuels, advanced feed stocks, co‑processing and other cutting‑edge emission reduction technologies and making a real impact on carbon reduction.
- Visibility of the full value chain optimisation of the fuels complex: from crude sourcing, refinery optimisation, cargo exports, inland barge and train logistics, biofuel blending to customer fuel sales.
- Producing novel ad‑hoc analysis and reports to support decision‑making by VP Risk and other senior management.
