Our client is seeking an experienced Automation Engineer to play a key role in advancing manufacturing performance through innovative engineering, digital technologies, and continuous improvement. This position offers the opportunity to work on complex production systems, optimise automated processes, and contribute to the future of intelligent manufacturing.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, you'll collaborate with operations, production, quality, maintenance and continuous improvement functions to deliver robust automation solutions that improve safety, productivity and product quality.

The Opportunity

This role is responsible for enhancing automated manufacturing equipment, improving process reliability and supporting the implementation of modern digital manufacturing technologies. You'll combine technical expertise with practical problem-solving to ensure production systems operate efficiently while meeting regulatory and quality requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain and enhance industrial automation systems to maximise equipment availability and manufacturing performance.
  • Identify opportunities to improve production efficiency through automation, process optimisation and technology upgrades.
  • Diagnose and resolve control system issues, implementing sustainable engineering solutions that minimise downtime.
  • Analyse manufacturing data to identify trends, improve process stability and support informed operational decisions.
  • Contribute to digital manufacturing initiatives, including connected equipment, real‑time data collection and smart factory technologies.
  • Apply Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma and statistical analysis techniques to improve process capability and eliminate waste.
  • Participate in technical investigations to determine root causes of equipment failures and process deviations.
  • Lead continuous improvement projects focused on increasing productivity, reducing defects and improving operational reliability.
  • Prepare and maintain engineering documentation, operating procedures and technical standards following system modifications.
  • Support deviation investigations, corrective actions and change management activities in line with quality and compliance requirements.
  • Deliver technical training and coaching to production, maintenance and engineering teams.
  • Provide specialist expertise on automation systems and support major capital or process improvement projects.
  • Coordinate with equipment suppliers, contractors and internal stakeholders to deliver engineering projects successfully.
What You’ll Bring

They are looking for an engineer who enjoys solving technical challenges and improving manufacturing performance through innovative thinking.

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • At least five years' experience supporting automated manufacturing environments.
  • Strong understanding of industrial automation, process control and equipment optimisation.
  • Knowledge of regulated manufacturing practices, equipment qualification and validation requirements.
  • Ability to work full‑time on site within a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility, including environments where beta‑lactam products are produced.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for project support or equipment activities.
Technical Skills

Experience with several of the following would be highly beneficial:

  • PLC programming and industrial control systems.
  • Human Machine Interface (HMI) and SCADA platforms.
  • Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), servo systems and motion control.
  • Pneumatic and hydraulic control systems.
  • Industrial networking and machine integration.
  • Vision inspection systems, robotics and advanced automation technologies.
  • Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and product serialization solutions.
Process Improvement Expertise

Successful candidates will demonstrate experience in:

  • Designing reliable automation solutions that reduce manual intervention and improve operational consistency.
  • Developing operator‑friendly systems that minimise the potential for human error through effective equipment design.
