Assistant Professor of Instruction
The Department of Philosophy invites applications for Assistant Professor of Instruction. The successful candidate will be expected to be an effective undergraduate and graduate teacher, contribute to department and college initiatives and leadership (especially the Philosophy Dialogues), and to be committed to teaching lower-level philosophy courses as part of a core curriculum.
Members of the department have secured funding through NSF, NEH, AAAS, The Department of Philosophy at Texas State University offers the B.A. in Philosophy; the B.A. in Religious Studies; the M.A. in Applied Philosophy and Ethics; undergraduate minors in Philosophy, Religious Studies, Value Studies, and Medical Humanities; and graduate certificates in Professional Ethics;
Philosophy and Ethics of Digital Technologies; and Environmental Leadership, Engagement and Ethics. Course assignments are based on expertise and departmental need, possibly including doctoral-level Responsible Conduct of Research/Research Ethics. Some teaching may be in evening courses or online. Summer teaching is sometimes available, depending on student demand. There are expectations of service related to teaching, course design, and curricular development at the departmental, college, university, and professional levels.
We strongly support cross-disciplinary initiatives. Members of the departmental faculty regularly teach courses in support of interdisciplinary programs across campus, teaching courses as part of 9 distinct programs including:
Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, the Honors College, Chemistry & Bio Chemistry, Sustainability Studies, History, and International Studies. The Department had more than 50 full-time faculty members in Fall 2025 and teaches the largest number of undergraduates in philosophy of any public university in Texas, averaging over 9,000 students per year over the past six years. Departmental activities include the Philosophy Dialogues, a program of ~60 public-facing events each semester including lectures, films, readings, performances, and discussions;
an active chapter of Phi Sigma Tau; an annual student symposium; an annual alumni banquet; a growing Religious Studies Student Organization; two student journals; three professional journals; an Ethics Bowl team, and an International Business Ethics and Sustainability Case Competition team.
All positions are subject to availability of funds.
Required Qualifications - MA in Philosophy by time of employment, PhD completed or expected by August 2027 (If PhD is expected, we require a letter from your committee chair/dissertation advisor confirming that). Expertise in at least three of Philosophy of Neuroscience, Philosophy of Biology, Data and Technology Ethics, Digital Humanities, GIS, Environmental Ethics. Expertise in either Ancient Philosophy or Philosophy of Religion.
Research Experience as part of a research team or larger project. Teaching Experience in Logic, Ethics, and Introduction to Philosophy.
Preferred Qualifications
- Teaching experience with one or more of:
The Meaning of Life or Philosophy of the Self. Experience teaching in a 2-year or community college.
