Treatment Operator I

Schedule:

Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm

Pay Rate:$24-$34

Job Summary:

The Treatment Operator I, operates and maintains the City's water treatment facility. Responsibilities include conducting tests on pumps, motors, and water, maintaining logs, and performing preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment. The shift schedule varies based on business needs, including Monday – Friday, or a 7-day on, 7-day off rotation for evening and day shifts.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Operate and maintain city water treatment facilities in compliance with city, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Perform routine tests on water treatment facility filters, treatment processes, chemicals, pumps, motors, and water; take appropriate gauge and meter readings.
  • Record plant telemetry information from satellite pumping stations; maintain records of water treatment facility operations.
  • Conduct routine inspections of water treatment facilities, monitors, pumps, tanks, valves, chemicals, clarifiers, and filters both visually and using a computer system; adjust equipment and chemicals to maintain specified operating conditions.
  • Perform various chemical analyses, including pH, alkalinity, chlorine, turbidity, fluorides, taste and odor control, and hardness tests; ensure proper calibration of measuring feed equipment.
  • Routinely use laboratory equipment and calibrate online monitoring analyzers.
  • Calculate and record various daily, weekly, and monthly chemical usage and water statistics on logs and charts.
  • Monitor plant distribution using the Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) System.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of water facilities; clean equipment as necessary.
  • Perform corrective and preventive maintenance of water treatment equipment.
  • Perform minor welding as needed.
  • Assist in preparing reports for state and federal regulatory agencies.
  • Operate a small boat to check and adjust the raw water intake (water treatment only).
  • Operate mower, weed eater, and other grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Operate backhoe and other heavy equipment as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Acceptable Experience, Training, Certifications, and Licenses

Minimum Requirements to Perform Work:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent, plus two (2) years of experience in water treatment operations; or any equivalent combination of experience and training providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Water Reclamation
    - Class C Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification (TCEQ) or Water Treatment
    - Class C Surface Water Certification (or greater) from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), required.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License applicable to job responsibilities, with an acceptable driving record.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of: Methods, practices, and equipment used in water treatment facilities; plumbing; welding; handling hazardous materials; minor electrical repair; basic chemistry; pumps and motors; water chemical analyzing equipment; city, state, and federal water treatment specifications and regulations; laboratory testing and procedures.
  • Skill/Ability to:
    • Learn and comply with state and federal regulations applicable to water treatment facilities.
    • Perform simple mathematical calculations.
    • Operate personal computers and computerized equipment.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication.
    • Operate and repair light equipment, such as power tools.
    • Operate and repair medium equipment and machinery, such as commercial mowers.
    • Operate and repair heavy or complex machinery, such as HVAC systems, construction equipment, or water plants.
