Surgical Technologist

Assist surgeons during surgical procedures by anticipating surgeon needs to make sure the procedure is executed as smoothly and efficiently as possible. They prepare and organize the operating room, clean and sterilize equipment, and maintain a sterile environment.

The Surgical Technologist 2 functions in the inter operative phase of patient care to expedite surgical procedures, under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. This position assists the surgical team through the use of equipment and instrumentation to ensure that the operating room environment is safe and that required equipment is available and functioning properly.

Essential functions of the role include discussing special needs with the surgeon before surgery, preparing the operative site, setting up the operating room, ensuring the proper functioning of surgical instruments, performing surgical counts, anticipating the needs of the surgeon and surgical team staff, assisting with draping and positioning the patient, receiving surgical specimens, assisting with placement of surgical dressings, disassembling surgical instrumentation, ensuring the cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, maintenance, and preparation of surgical instruments, cleaning the operating room following each case, and following infection control policies.

Key success factors include knowledge of infection prevention and regulatory sterilization standards, knowledge of the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique, knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures and implementation tools and technologies, good verbal and written communication skills, and occasional exposure to chemical and radiation hazards.

Qualifications include graduation from an accredited program, less than 1 year of experience, and certification/license/registration including Basic Life Support (BLS) and Cert Surgical Technologist (CST).
