The Nuclear Medicine Technologist, under general supervision of a Radiologist, performs nuclear medicine, PET, and theranostic procedures on ambulatory and hospital patients as ordered by a physician or other licensed provider. This role follows established protocols to support accurate diagnosis and patient care.
Key ResponsibilitiesQuality Assurance
Perform high-quality nuclear medicine, PET, and theranostic imaging procedures (planar, SPECT, SPECT/CT) according to protocol and within expected time frames.
Evaluate image quality and follow established standards and procedures.
Complete required equipment quality control (QC) per manufacturer guidelines, radiation materials license (RAM) requirements, and ACR standards.
Coordinate with engineers and physicists to support optimal equipment performance.
Patient Care and Communication
Confirm patient needs and ensure the correct exam is performed.
Explain procedures clearly, establish rapport, and support patients and families in accordance with HIPAA.
Assess patient tolerance and readiness for imaging procedures.
Follow infection control practices and safety protocols.
Prepare the patient and procedure area, including positioning and use of immobilization devices as needed.
Maintain hand hygiene and use aseptic or sterile technique when required.
Radiation Safety
Follow all radiation safety policies and procedures.
Verify correct radiopharmaceutical selection for exam or treatment.
Screen patients for pregnancy status prior to exams or treatments when applicable.
Administer radiopharmaceuticals and adjunctive medications per protocol.
Educate patients on radiation safety precautions before and after procedures.
Follow proper radioactive material disposal guidelines.
Collaboration and Workflow
Report issues to leadership or appropriate department personnel.
Assist with supply inventory and ordering radiopharmaceuticals for patient care and QC needs.
Work collaboratively with colleagues, nursing partners, medical staff, and Radiologists.
Ensure accurate transfer of images to PACS for physician review and dictation.
Required QualificationsCertification:ARRT (N) or
CNMT
BLS:American Heart Association (AHA) only
Experience:Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
Ability to work independently with minimal routine oversight
Strong communication skills and professionalism in a patient-facing environment
Comfortable taking call as required
Preferred Skills and CompetenciesAbility to recognize and communicate changes in patient condition to nursing, providers, or emergency response teams
Strong attention to detail for modality worklist integrity, documentation, and record management
Proficiency with general computer applications (Microsoft Office, EMR, PACS, email) and information security practices
Commitment to timely, accurate, cost-effective service delivery in compliance with regulatory standards
Ability to remain calm and helpful in high-stress situations
Willingness to support onboarding/training of new team members and students when needed
