Deputy Marshal; Part-Time

Job Summary

Hiring range: $21.56/hr minimum - $24.26/hr 1st quartile (Depending on qualifications). Under the supervision of the Court Administrator, primarily responsible for the provision of active physical security for the Municipal Court during sessions. May provide additional physical security to the Municipal Court Staff as needed. Maintains order and decorum of the Municipal Court. Performs other duties as assigned.

• Maintain order during court sessions and remain alert to possible disturbances; provide security for the Judge in attendance; obtain materials needed by the Judge during proceedings; announce Judge and call court to order; maintain custody of offenders awaiting trial or transport back to the jail; remand persons to custody during court proceedings.
• Provide safety and security for the Municipal Court, its employees, customers and the public. Perform various peace officer duties, including responding to requests from other law enforcement agencies for backup and emergency assistance.
• Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance; ability to create and maintain professional, harmonious working relationships.

• High School Diploma or GED; associate degree or 60 credit 44 hours from an accredited college or university preferred.
• Knowledge of judicial process, municipal court procedures, state, local, and federal laws relating to law enforcement, City ordinances and City Marshal's Office policies and procedures.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; analyze and solve problems; deal tactfully with co-workers; interact effectively with a variety of individuals under potentially hostile and stressful situations; skill in the use and care of firearms, and the dynamics of arrest and seizure.
• Ability to utilize physical security equipment, including pass-through and wand type metal detectors; appropriate levels of force including verbal skills, defensive tactics, pepper spray and firearms.
• Experience in street-level law enforcement desirable; possesses safety skills inherent to police work.

• Must complete TCOLE Court Security Course within one year of employment. Certified Law Enforcement Officer in Texas, annual continuing education required to retain TCOLE certification.
• Must pass background review and investigation. Valid driver's license required and must maintain good driving record per City of Rowlett standards. Must report all traffic citations within two working days of receipt.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen and able to read and write English.
• Works in a climate-controlled office environment; may involve sitting, walking, reaching, bending, climbing, and occasionally lifting up to 40 lbs.
• Part-time employees working a schedule of less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for City benefits or participation in the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS); these employees participate in a Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) plan as an alternative to Social Security.
