Programmer I – Laser Cutting and CNC Programming

The Programmer I develops and manages machine programs for laser cutting equipment while steadily building expertise in punch press and combination machine programming. This role directly supports production efficiency, material optimization, and manufacturing quality by creating accurate, machine-ready programs and collaborating closely with engineering, production, and planning teams.

Responsibilities
  • Create, modify, test, and maintain laser cutting machine programs using CAM software to ensure parts meet quality and design specifications.
  • Review engineering blueprints, manufacturing drawings, material specifications, and job documentation to translate requirements into accurate machine programs.
  • Interpret dimensions, tolerances, and material details to confirm manufacturing feasibility before releasing programs to production.
  • Optimize nesting layouts to maximize material utilization, reduce scrap and waste, and improve production efficiency and cost control.
  • Develop and expand skills in punch press and combination machine programming to support a broader range of fabrication operations.
  • Troubleshoot programming issues by working directly with machine operators and correct program errors that affect part quality or machine performance.
  • Support production teams when programming problems arise, ensuring minimal downtime and consistent output.
  • Maintain program libraries, manage revisions, and apply revision control practices to keep programs organized and up to date.
  • Coordinate closely with engineering, production, planning, and shop floor personnel to align programs with material flow and production requirements.
  • Participate in process improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives to enhance efficiency, quality, and standardization.
  • Assist with training and onboarding efforts related to programming practices, tools, and procedures as assigned.
  • Follow established quality and safety procedures while working in both office and manufacturing environments.
Essential Skills
  • Hands-on experience creating and maintaining laser cutting machine programs using CAM software.
  • Ability to create machine-ready programs that generate optimized nests and support efficient production.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and manufacturing drawings, including dimensions and tolerances.
  • Understanding of sheet metal fabrication processes, including laser cutting and punching operations.
  • Knowledge of material flow and shop floor production requirements in a fabrication environment.
  • Skill in nesting optimization to maximize material utilization and reduce scrap and waste.
  • Experience working directly with machine operators to troubleshoot and correct programming issues.
  • Familiarity with revision control practices and maintaining organized program libraries.
  • Basic understanding of manufacturing ERP/MRP systems.
  • Foundational knowledge of lean manufacturing principles.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in technical work.
  • Effective problem-solving abilities for resolving programming and production challenges.
  • Organizational skills for managing multiple programs, revisions, and job priorities.
  • Clear communication skills for collaborating with operators, supervisors, engineers, and planners.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.

  • Experience with CAM systems and CNC programming in a manufacturing environment.
  • Exposure to punch press programming and combination machine programming.
  • Experience working with laser cutting, press brake, and sheet metal fabrication equipment.
  • Familiarity with Amada press brake or similar fabrication systems.
  • Background using manufacturing ERP/MRP systems for job and material tracking.
