Responsibilities- Under the direction of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, diagnose and repair, service, perform preventive maintenance and inspect a wide variety of gasoline, alternative fuel, and diesel-powered equipment, automobiles; light, medium and heavy-duty trucks; and construction equipment. May also perform related duties in the field and perform other duties as assigned.
- Service, diagnose and perform complex automotive, truck and equipment repairs on gas and diesel engines, hydraulic repairs, brakes and related components of electrical, mechanical, and computerized vehicle systems. Diagnose and repair malfunctions on vehicle computer components.
- Perform preventive maintenance inspections and State vehicle inspections; road‑test vehicles and equipment for proper operation before returning them to the user department. May modify, fabricate, and install special equipment.
- Assist and work with other technicians to perform complex repair problems. Respond to road calls and make on‑site repairs. In the absence of the supervisor, assist with leading the work activities of others.
- Weld metal components to repair parts for equipment and vehicles. Diagnose and repair malfunctioning hydraulic systems.
- Diagnose malfunctioning light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles and equipment and determine the actions to be taken for repair. Clean bay areas, return tools and equipment to their prior location, pick up parts and supplies as needed, generate repair orders and obtain purchase orders for work performed and parts purchased.
- Perform other duties as assigned. Regular, reliable, and non‑disruptive attendance is an essential function of this position, as is the ability to create and maintain professional, harmonious working relationships with others.
- High School Diploma or GED required. Completion of a technical or trade school program in automotive and heavy truck technology strongly preferred.
- Four (4) years of experience in the repair and service of gasoline and diesel engines, automobiles; light, medium, and heavy‑duty trucks; and construction equipment with on‑board components. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Working knowledge in servicing, troubleshooting, diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and computer component malfunctions of automobiles, light, medium, and heavy‑duty trucks, and construction equipment. Knowledge of Federal, State, and local environmental and inspection laws and regulations applicable to vehicle and equipment standards.
- Effective oral and written communication skills. Skill in use of hand and power tools; operating a variety of computerized monitors, scanners, and analyzers with an understanding of computer codes to diagnose equipment and vehicle problems. Ability to read, understand, and utilize technical repair manuals and schematics. Must be able to use a computer, work well in a team environment, and maintain a safe work environment.
- Valid driver’s license required. Must obtain a “Class A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 90 days of employment as a condition of continued employment. Must have and maintain a good driving record in accordance with the driving standards established by the City of Rowlett. Must report all traffic citations to the Department Director or designee within two working days of receipt.
- Must obtain a Texas Department of Public Safety Inspection Certification and a Freon Recovery Certification within six months of assignment to position. Must obtain within one year a minimum of two ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications unless you have a degree or certification from an automotive or truck manufacturer‑certified training program, technical or trade school program in automotive and heavy truck technology.
- Must reside within a 1‑hour response time from the Public Works Building; employee will have six (6) months from employment date to relocate. Will be subject to covering/handling first‑call or back‑up call when assigned.
- Work involves considerable exposure to disagreeable elements. Requires heavy lifting (50‑100 lbs.), carrying, climbing, driving, and working outside. Exposure to vehicles on car lifts, running vehicles, solvents, fuels and paints.
