Crew Leader – Water/Wastewater & Drainage Operations

City of Rowlett | Public Works

Build the Backbone of a Growing City

Rowlett operates on a 4-day work week.

If you’re the kind of leader who thrives in the field—not behind a desk—this is your opportunity to step into a role where your impact is visible every day. From keeping water flowing to maintaining critical infrastructure, you’ll lead a skilled crew responsible for the systems that keep Rowlett running.

This isn’t just maintenance—it’s mission-critical work that protects public health, supports growth, and keeps our community moving.

What You’ll Do:

As a Crew Leader, you’ll take ownership of daily field operations, leading a team responsible for the construction, repair, and maintenance of the City’s water, wastewater, and drainage systems.

You will:
  • Lead, coordinate, and support a small, high-performing crew in the field.
  • Plan and execute projects involving water lines, sewer systems, drainage infrastructure, and surface restoration (concrete/asphalt).
  • Ensure all tools, equipment, and materials are safe, functional, and job-ready.
  • Perform and oversee hands-on work including system repairs, grading, and site setup.
  • Operate and guide the use of heavy equipment, hand tools, and power tools (jackhammers, saws, compressors, etc.).
  • Read grades and assist with layout and staking for projects.
  • Train and develop team members in water/wastewater maintenance operations.
  • Maintain work orders, service requests, and operational records.
  • Monitor inventory and initiate purchase requests for materials and equipment.

Enforce safety standards, department policies, and operational procedures.

This is a working leadership role
—you’ll be leading from the front, not the sidelines.

What You Bring (Minimum Requirements):
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 3+ years of experience in water/wastewater construction, maintenance, or repair.
  • At least 3 years of lead or crew leadership experience.
  • Working knowledge of:
    • Water and wastewater systems.
    • Concrete and asphalt repair.
    • Field safety practices and signage.
  • Ability to:
    • Lead crews, assign work, and ensure accountability.
    • Operate heavy equipment and tools safely and effectively.
    • Read and interpret technical instructions and field data.
    • Communicate clearly with team members, other departments, and the public.
Licenses &

Certifications:
  • Valid Texas Class A CDL (or ability to obtain).
  • Tanker endorsement (or ability to obtain within 30 days).
  • Class C Water Distribution License (TCEQ).
  • Class II Wastewater Collection License (TCEQ).
    • (or ability to obtain within 6 months).
  • Clean driving record in accordance with City standards.
What Sets You Apart:
  • Experience leading crews in a municipal or public works environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of water/wastewater system operations and infrastructure.
  • Experience with preventative maintenance programs and asset management.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in field conditions.
  • Ability to mentor and develop entry-level or junior team members.
  • Experience managing multiple projects or work orders simultaneously.
What to Expect:
  • Work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
  • Exposure to typical utility work environments (dust, noise, confined spaces, equipment hazards).
  • Physical demands including:
    • Lifting up to 50 lbs.
    • Pulling/pushing up to 100 lbs.
    • Standing, bending, and working in the field for extended periods.
  • On-call responsibilities for emergency response.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work
    .
Why This Role Matters:

Every repair you oversee, every crew you lead, and every system you maintain directly impacts the safety, reliability, and growth of the City of Rowlett. This is a role where leadership meets craftsmanship—and where your work truly shows.
