Eligibility for Funding: Position is funded through grant allocations or student enrollment‑based funding. Continued employment is contingent upon availability of future funding on a yearly basis.

Job Description

Purpose Statement: The job of Special Education Mild/Moderate Elementary Para educator was established to assist assigned teaching personnel in the supervision and instruction of special education students; perform classroom clerical tasks; and assist students with personal care and special health care needs, while developing students’ academic, daily living, and behavioral skills.

Duties and Responsibilities (not exhaustive)
  • Provides dedicated one‑on‑one support to students with mild to moderate disabilities, assisting with academic tasks, behavior management, and social‑emotional development in alignment with the student’s individualized education plan (IEP).
  • Communicates with parents for the purpose of scheduling meetings and taking messages for special education teachers.
  • Assists in maintaining students’ files/records, documenting activities and providing reliable information.
  • Monitors individual students in classrooms, school, and community, ensuring a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Performs record‑keeping and clerical functions (e.g., scheduling, copying) to support teachers and administrators.
  • Adapts to changing work priorities, displays tact and courtesy, meets deadlines, sets priorities, and pays attention to detail.
  • Adapts classroom work under teacher direction, supporting and reinforcing lesson plans.
  • Supports students in a variety of settings: special education classroom, general education classroom, one‑on‑one, etc.
  • Provides accommodations such as reading tests aloud, scribe, alternate assessment location, check‑in/check‑out support, etc.
  • Supports classroom teacher in collecting data.
  • Assists other personnel as required.
  • Implements instructional behavioral programs under teacher supervision to improve academic success.
  • Assists with daily living skills (e.g., toileting, diaper changing, feeding, personal hygiene) on an occasional basis.
  • Performs duties assigned by the building administrator or special education department for the benefit of special education students.
  • Attendance is an Essential Function: Physical presence at the worksite is essential.
Qualifications

Basic

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to assume and maintain various postures (kneeling, squatting, bending, standing, sitting) for extended periods.
  • Ability to safely manage physically or verbally aggressive students.
  • Lift occasionally up to 60 lbs. at a height of 36 inches and frequently up to 25 lbs. at the same height.
  • Ability to enter and exit full‑size 8‑passenger vans.
  • Sanitize and clean equipment (work boxes, exercise equipment, walkers, wheelchairs).
  • Remain calm and follow safety procedures in emergencies.
  • Walk with students to bus stops in inclement weather and train them to use public transportation.
  • Willing to participate and utilize MANDT training.
  • Potential exposure to bio‑hazards (blood borne pathogens, human waste, cleaning/disinfecting materials).
