Job Summary
Responsible for maintaining a safe and peaceful environment for all individuals on hospital property. Under general supervision and following standardized policies and procedures, it is responsible for maintaining a secure and orderly environment and protection of the grounds and off‑site buildings for Corewell Health, including safety of employees, visitors, and patients. This position may require Armed Security Officers to obtain Public Act 330 certification and to arrest for misdemeanors offenses under Michigan law, and must complete the Michigan State Police PA 330 certification requirements.
EssentialFunctions
- Patrol campus on foot, by vehicle, or on bike as assigned. Offer assistance such as unlocking doors and providing motor assistance outside, and remain observant for suspicious activities and security violations.
- Accept and perform various duties at assigned posts and assist patients, visitors, and employees; enforce rules, regulations, and policies of the hospital as appropriate.
- Assist in the Security Operations Center by monitoring phones, alarms, cameras, and radio traffic.
- Provide statistical safety and security reporting to internal customers and senior management regarding performance, improvement strategies and initiatives, and compliance issues.
- Complete assigned or self‑generated reports or logs daily on all activities, irregularities, and investigations; log all calls and lost articles, and send reports to managers and executives.
- Investigate suspected crimes on hospital grounds and off‑site locations, prepare reports, evaluate pertinent data, and cooperate with law enforcement on complaints.
- Provide security escorts and other assistance to employees, visitors or patients as conditions warrant for safety.
- Respond to routine inquiries and direct visitors to appropriate areas, preventing unauthorized access to restricted zones.
- Use proactive non‑violent verbal de‑escalation skills to neutralize volatile situations involving patients, staff, and visitors.
- Assist nursing staff with physical management or restraint of patients as ordered by a physician.
- In dealing with non‑patient aggressors, use defensive tactics and approved MCOLES force continuum when necessary to safeguard lives and well‑being of staff, patients, and visitors.
- Possess, carry, and utilize Conduit Electronic Weapons, tasers, and other weapons in conjunction with MCOLES force continuum as determined by Corewell Health policy.
- Provide CPR or first aid in the event of a medical emergency on the grounds or in public areas until trained medical staff arrive.
- Assist Emergency Department staff with Hazmat/Decontamination procedures, including donning and doffing of PAPR/Tyvek suits and maintaining order in the decontamination area.
- Report and respond to incidents of fire and/or safety hazards.
- Inspect firefighting apparatus, extinguishers; assist with regularly scheduled fire, disaster, and other emergency drills.
- Assist in the release of patient remains to appropriate agencies or funeral homes.
At locations where PA 330 is in place, all the above essential duties plus:
- Utilize police authority to arrest for both felonies and misdemeanors on Corewell Health property under Michigan law (PA 330).
- Utilize citation/ticket writing and ordinance enforcement authority under Michigan law (PA 330) and local city ordinances.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of two to three years of law‑enforcement related work experience (police officer, hospital security, corporate security, reserve police officer, or military police).
- The ability to take charge and direct others in emergencies or other dangerous incidents.
- Electronic Control Devices (ECD) use – requires approval by the Director; requires a current Carry Pistol License (CPL) and successful completion of the specialized Taser Training Course.
- Licensed driver’s license (MI) upon hire.
- Criminal/First Aid Certificate – AHA (American Heart Association) 90 days.
- Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Course – 90 days.
