Overview
The System Engineer provides technical support for plant systems, components, and related programs. This role is responsible for resolving day‑to‑day plant issues, maintaining configuration control, supporting Maintenance and Operations, and ensuring the reliability and performance of assigned systems. The position serves as a key interface between Engineering and other station departments while contributing to both emergent troubleshooting and long‑term program health.
Responsibilities- Identify and resolve plant issues, including those arising from significant events and complex technical challenges.
- Provide technical support to Maintenance and Operations for troubleshooting equipment, systems, and emergent conditions.
- Develop and issue engineering changes, including design modifications and temporary alterations, in support of plant needs and equipment reliability.
- Maintain Emergency Response Organization (ERO) qualifications and perform associated duties as required.
- Provide technical information and guidance related to program bases, performance requirements, compliance status, and industry operating experience.
- Conduct condition‑based monitoring of equipment and optimize preventative maintenance activities using feedback from Maintenance and program reviews.
- Plan, prioritize, and support project lifecycle activities, including corrective action plans and improvement initiatives.
- Prepare engineering products in accordance with established standards, procedures, and quality expectations.
- Support changes in system and component configuration, design, and associated design basis.
- Serve on outage engineering support teams for online system outages and refueling outages.
- Monitor system performance, including trending, field walkdowns, deficiency identification, and priority setting.
- Perform failure evaluations and support or lead root cause analyses, as needed.
- Ensure lessons learned from fleet operating experience are incorporated into site programs and processes.
- Maintain required qualifications and complete training necessary for assigned duties.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program
- OR a related physical science discipline associated with power plant operations
- OR equivalent work experience demonstrating success at the engineer/technical specialist level.
Experience
Experience levels vary by position:
- Engineer I / Technical Specialist I: 0–2 years of nuclear design, operations, or equivalent experience
- Engineer II / Technical Specialist II: 2–3 years
- Engineer III / Technical Specialist III: 4-5 years
- Senior Engineer / Technical Specialist IV: 6-8 years
- Senior Lead Engineer: 8+ years, based on overall experience and prior role evaluations
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Proficiency in PC applications, engineering tools, and analytical systems appropriate to the engineering level.
- SRO license or certification on a PWR or BWR.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Work is primarily performed in an office environment; however, routine field visits are required (often daily or at least weekly).
- Field activities may involve walking, climbing stairs, ladders, or scaffolding; carrying up to 5 lbs.; and exposure to outdoor conditions, heavy machinery, hazardous substances, and high noise levels with appropriate personal protective equipment.
- As a provider of essential services, employees must be available to work additional hours, perform duties at alternate locations, and support response efforts during storms, outages, emergencies, or other events as deemed necessary. Exempt employees are not eligible for overtime compensation related to these duties.
