Fire Protection Engineer; Nuclear

JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE

Fire Protection, within the Central Programs Engineering Department, maintains fire protection design control and provides technical support to the plant. It maintains the design integrity of the Fire Protection program through configuration control of design output documents, performs NFPA 805 monitoring and advocacy for program improvement, and develops long‑range planning for system improvements.

• Maintain the Fire Protection Design Basis at the site.
• Ensure the three defense‑in‑depth echelons are maintained: prevention, early detection and suppression, and protection of essential safety functions.
• Provide cost‑effective modification designs to improve the fire protection program and safe shutdown capability.
• Provide technical support to operations, maintenance, engineering, and other site organizations.
• Develop, plan, and coordinate special projects, corrective action plans, and improvement programs for fire protection plant problems or regulatory issues.
• Ensure engineering products comply with the fire protection program and established standards.
• Prepare impact reviews, evaluations, load calculations, and fire hazards analyses.

B.S. Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or Fire Protection Engineering Technology from an accredited program or equivalent work experience. If not a graduate in the field, a minimum of 6 years of engineering experience at a Highly Protected Risk facility is required.

• Engineer II: 2+ years of experience (1+ year with master’s degree)
• Engineer III: 4+ years of experience (3+ years with PE/master’s degree)
• Engineer Senior: 6+ years of experience (5+ years with PE/master’s degree)
• Engineer Senior Lead: 10+ years of experience (8+ years with PE/master’s degree)

Proficient in fire protection engineering principles for Highly Protected Risk facilities, including hazard analyses, modeling, performance tests, failure analyses, PHA, NFPA code reviews, and code assessments. Proven ability to interface with Federal, State, and local regulatory agencies. Technical understanding of nuclear generation principles desired. Strong interpersonal, conflict management, problem solving, change management, written and oral communication skills. Proficient in Microsoft desktop software.

Professional Engineering license (preferred). SFPE membership and qualification (preferred).

Employees may be required to work additional hours, alternate locations, or in emergency situations. Exempt employees are not eligible for overtime. Employees are required to be on an ERO rotation.
