Position Summary

Rutland City Public Schools is seeking a dynamic, diligent, and student-centered special educator to join the Bridges Program, a small, supportive learning community designed for students in grades 7–8 who benefit from a more personalized and flexible educational environment. The Bridges Program is focused on cultivating a compassionate learning community where student voice is valued, and learners are engaged in meaningful, authentic experiences.

Instruction emphasizes interdisciplinary learning across humanities and STEM, while also prioritizing the development of students’ social-emotional and behavioral skills. The successful candidate will be an integral member of a collaborative team responsible for designing and delivering engaging, standards-based instruction through an interdisciplinary and project-based approach. This educator will support students who may have experienced challenges in traditional classroom settings by providing individualized support and fostering positive relationships.

This role requires the ability to function in multiple capacities, including lead teacher, co-teacher, and instructional support for colleagues.

Responsibilities
  • Design and implement engaging, interdisciplinary curriculum aligned with middle school standards.
  • Use project-based and experiential learning to promote critical thinking and real-world application.
  • Build strong, positive relationships with students to support engagement and growth.
  • Collaborate with team members in various roles, including lead teacher, co‑teacher, and instructional support/coach.
  • Identify and support students’ social, emotional, and behavioral needs.
  • Facilitate effective group work and foster a positive classroom community.
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with families regarding student progress and classroom activities.
  • Direct instruction, oversight of IEP services, and case management.
  • Partner with families and caregivers to support student success.
  • Use basic computer or technology tools to support classroom documentation, communication, and program needs.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field, required.
  • Valid Vermont Teaching License with endorsement in Humanities or Educational Technology Specialist, or the ability to obtain, required.
  • Experience working with middle school students, preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of project-based learning, differentiated instruction, and student-centered practices.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills.
  • Experience supporting students with social-emotional and/or behavioral needs, preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods and move throughout the facility as required.
  • Ability to sit, bend, kneel, and reach as needed to support student learning and classroom activities.
  • Ability to respond promptly to student needs, including behavioral or safety situations.
  • Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to approximately 25 pounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and families in person and through various communication methods.
  • Ability to operate standard classroom and office equipment, including computers and instructional technology.
  • Ability to maintain regular attendance.
  • Schedule and duties may vary based on assignment and school needs.
