Job DescriptionRutland Town School seeks a 1.0 FTE school nurse to build relationships and keep students and staff healthy and safe. The successful candidate will possess strong nursing knowledge, effective communication, collaboration skills, flexibility, and the ability to establish positive rapport with students, staff, and families.
Responsibilities- Perform nursing assessment, treatment, first aid, and emergency care using critical thinking skills.
- Administer and monitor medications taken at school and delegate appropriate nursing tasks when necessary.
- Manage and implement medical action plans (e.g., allergies, asthma) and maintain comprehensive, confidential student health records compliant with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Use current technology for health record databases used throughout the district.
- Manage communicable diseases and maintain school medical supplies and equipment.
- Develop and implement individualized healthcare plans for students with chronic health conditions.
- Collaborate with parents and medical/health care communities to promote health care services for students.
- Maintain AEDs on school grounds and maintain confidentiality.
- Communicate with families and staff regarding health-related issues and provide resources and referrals.
- Promote school-wide wellness through health education.
- Maintain annual standing physician orders for stock epinephrine and over-the-counter medications.
- Work with the athletic director regarding student‑athlete health and well‑being.
- Collaborate with school administration and staff as needed.
- Prepare and submit annual Vermont State Health Office reports and perform yearly health screenings per Vermont School Health Services Standards of Practice.
- Obtain and maintain pre‑K licensing requirements and follow school and state policies regarding attendance, dismissal, and follow‑up during the school day.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from a nursing program accredited by the National League for Nursing (NLN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
- Valid Vermont Educator’s License with a 3-65 school nurse endorsement (or eligibility to hold).
- Valid license as a Professional Registered Nurse (RN) in Vermont.
- Current certifications in CPR, AED, and First Aid.
- Knowledge of general nursing and school nursing responsibilities.
- Completion of an educational orientation program provided through the Vermont Agency of Education based on the Vermont School Quality Standards and the Vermont Manual of School Health Services Standards of Practice.
- Must submit a cover letter, resume, and three letters of reference.
- 1–3 years of relevant nursing experience.
- Extensive knowledge of general nursing and school nursing responsibilities.
- Experience supporting students across the school’s system of support.
