Dual-Role Teaching Structure (2 positions)
Position Title:
Functional Life Skills Instructional Specialist (Position 1 of
2)
Category: Instructional Specialist
Reports To: Building Administration/Special Education Administration
Work Year: 2025/2026 Calendar Year (1 Year Only)
Qualifications: Maine Certification: 282 or appropriate Special Education endorsement, OR under the supervision of a 282 AND concurrent enrollment in the USM Apprenticeship Program. Experience with functional and life skills programming.
General Role: Designs and delivers specialized instruction aligned to student goals, emphasizing functional academics, communication, and life skills.
Primary Duties:
- Deliver functional academics, life skills, and community-based instruction
- Develop, adapt, and implement instructional strategies and curriculum
- Implement behavior plans and instructional routines
- Supervise and model instructional practices for ed techs
Behavior Support:
- Implement Positive Behavior Support Plans in the classroom
- Train and coach support staff in behavior management techniques
Instructional Oversight:
- Adapt curriculum based on student need and goal progress
- Design and lead functional routines (e.g., meal prep, hygiene)
Staff
Collaboration:
Communication:
- Regularly communicate with families about student engagement and skills
- Participate in team meetings and home-school collaboration
Compliance & Documentation:
- Support data collection on instructional practices and student performance
Professional Development:
- Participate in ongoing training for instruction and behavior management
Shared Expectations:
- Promote a positive and inclusive learning environment
- Collaborate closely with co-teacher to align instruction and compliance
- Uphold district and state special education standards
- These positions work in close partnership and require frequent communication and collaboration.
- Flexibility and cross-support are expected depending on student needs and staffing.
- These roles may evolve with program expansion and student complexity.
Additional Duties: Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
