- Alternative Education Teacher (grades 7/8)

Position Purpose

The Middle School Alternative Education Teacher provides academic instruction, behavioral support, and social-emotional guidance to students who require an alternative educational setting. The teacher creates a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment designed to help students achieve academic success, develop positive behavioral skills, and successfully transition to less restrictive educational settings when appropriate.

Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver engaging, standards-based instruction aligned with district and state curriculum expectations.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of students.
  • Develop individualized learning plans and interventions based on student strengths and needs.
  • Monitor student progress and adjust instructional practices accordingly.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional strategies, technology, and hands‑on learning experiences to promote student engagement.
  • Establish positive relationships with students and foster a culture of respect, accountability, and belonging.
  • Implement behavior intervention plans and support students in developing self-regulation and problem‑solving skills.
  • Provide social‑emotional learning opportunities and integrate restorative practices into daily instruction.
  • Collaborate with counselors, special educators, administrators, and other support staff to address student needs.
  • Assist students in setting academic, behavioral, and personal goals.
  • Maintain regular communication with families regarding student progress, attendance, and behavior.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to support student transitions and continuity of learning.
  • Work closely with community agencies and service providers when appropriate.
  • Create and maintain a safe, structured, and predictable learning environment.
  • Establish clear expectations and consistent routines.
  • Maintain accurate records related to attendance, behavior, academic performance, and interventions.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities related to alternative education, trauma-informed practices, behavior management, and instructional strategies.
Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent. The above description is illustrative of tasks and responsibilities and is not an exhaustive list.

Equipment

Uses standard office equipment such as personal computer, printer, copier, fax machine, and telephone.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of middle school curriculum and concepts, including all subject matters taught.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self‑evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others involved in the course of work.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

Works in standard office and school building environments.

Qualifications Profile
  • Maine State Certification as a Middle School Teacher.
  • Maine State Certification in the appropriate subject matter preferred and may be required.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
Education

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
