Special Education Teacher (Young School ? Kindergarten, First Grade, Second Grade)
Under the general supervision of the Building Principal and Director of Special Education, the Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction to students with disabilities in grades Kindergarten through Second Grade. The teacher develops and implements individualized educational programs designed to support students' academic, behavioral, social-emotional, communication, and functional needs. The Special Education Teacher collaborates with families, educational technicians, related service providers, and general education staff to ensure students receive appropriate services and access to the curriculum in the least restrictive environment.
EssentialFunctions
- Completes all special education documentation accurately, in compliance with federal and state regulations, and submits required paperwork within established timelines.
- Maintains compliant and confidential special education records and files.
- Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
- Prepares for assigned instructional responsibilities and provides evidence of preparation upon request.
- Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the developmental needs and interests of students.
- Employs a variety of instructional strategies, interventions, and materials to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
- Supports the implementation of the district's educational philosophy, curriculum, and instructional goals.
- Maintains accurate records of student attendance, performance, and progress as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
- Assists in implementing district policies and procedures related to student conduct and maintains a positive, structured learning environment.
- Provides guidance and direction to education technicians and other support staff assigned to work with students.
- Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
- Attends staff meetings and serves on district and building committees in order to take part in decision‑making process.
- Encourages students to set and maintain high standards of classroom behavior.
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students.
- Coordinate services across all agency lines and serve as a single point of contact.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Building Administration and Director of Instructional Support/Special Education.
- Valid Maine Department of Education certification with appropriate Special Education endorsement.
- Knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with staff, families, and community agencies.
- Strong communication, organizational, and instructional skills.
Rate to be established by the Superintendent.
EvaluationAs applicable, based on hours worked.
