Position: Tool & Gage Maker #2, 1st Shift

Job Summary

Hourly Rate: $30.89 per hour.

Job Location: Saco, Maine, United States.

General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, a premier provider of ordnance weapons and tactical systems to the U.S. Department of Defense and allied nations, is seeking a Tool & Gage Maker to join our Saco Operations team. We support the mission of the warfighter. Our products are used by every U.S. Military branch and allied nations worldwide. We are looking for motivated and creative individuals who want to shape and support this organization.

The Tool & Gage Maker #2 sets up and operates various types of conventional metal working machines such as milling machines, grinders, etc. Routinely works to gauge maker tolerances of +/- .0002 under guidance of Tool and Gage Maker #1. Analyzes blueprints, drawings, sketches, process specifications, etc. to determine fabrication and sequence of machining operations, following established company directives, policies, military specifications, quality documents and manufacturing instructions.

Responsibilities
  • Performs Rockwell Hardness Tests on metal to determine tensile strength and degree of hardness using precision measuring equipment such as micrometers, Cadillac gages, height gages, dial indicators, surface plates, gage blocks, sine bars and plates, super micrometers, optical comparators, etc.
  • Ensures precision machining with constant awareness of cleanliness, rigidity, trueness, and alignment of workpiece and equipment during all set‑up and machining operations.
  • Uses taper attachments, rotary tables, grinding attachments, etc.; is familiar with machine accessories and knows the type of metal, condition, hardness, tolerances, finish heat‑treat requirements, etc. of individual work pieces.
  • Maintains constant awareness of squareness of the workpiece during machining operations, sets up index heads, determines correct hole plates, circuits, and the appropriate number of turns for required division of circle, and machines angles to minutes, degrees, and second tolerances, often to tolerances of plus or minus one ten thousandth of an inch (.0001).
  • Indicates work pieces, vises, universal heads, tables, fixtures, etc., to insure proper alignment and may use edge finders, dial indicators, magnetic base holders, etc.
  • Converts between decimal and metric units as required.
  • Works closely with and sometimes assists Tool and Gage Maker #1, consulting supervision when in doubt to prevent damage to expensive cutters or personal injury, and practices safety and good housekeeping policies and procedures.
Qualifications
  • Knowledgeable of tool and alloy steels, designations, chemical compositions, and physical properties.
  • Knowledgeable of cutter geometries, machineability ratings of materials and capable of calculating speeds and feeds for setup operations.
  • Knowledgeable of thread nomenclature and experienced with threading operations using geometric die heads, single‑point tool bits on lathes, hand dies, etc.
  • Familiar with classes of threads, pitch diameter limits, tap drill sizes, and percentage of threads.
  • Knowledgeable of drill nomenclature, various types and styles of drills, drill point geometries, etc.
  • Knowledgeable of work‑holding devices and methods of mounting wheels and cutters.
  • Knowledgeable of abrasive types and uses such as diamond, borazon, aluminum oxide, carborundum, etc., wheels.
  • Knowledgeable of grinding wheel designations such as grain structure, grade, type bond, etc.

High school diploma or G.E.D. required. Limited supervision required. Must be capable of performing all tasks and duties of Tool & Gage Maker #3. May be required to enter and verify information into written forms or database(s) as appropriate. May be required to perform other duties as directed by supervision.
