Job Summary

Responsible for the direct supervision of a group of 8‑13 year‑old children in a half‑day summer camp focused on sports and active recreation. Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, supervises assigned campers and assists with planning, leading, and monitoring engaging activities that promote physical activity, teamwork, and fun while ensuring a safe and positive camp experience for all participants. Pre‑summer training will take place between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm.

The position will start on June 11, 2026. The Recreation Leader will be assigned a variable schedule that will typically require 3‑5 hours per weekday between the hours of 7:30 AM and 1:00 PM. Schedules and hours will vary based on camp enrollment in 2026, and end on August 7, 2026. All Camp staff must be available to start work on the first day of camp.

The Recreation Leader‑is expected to work effectively under minimal supervision. Work within a framework of standard District policies and procedures.

Example Of Essential Job Functions
  • Maintains a sincere interest in providing each child with a positive summer camp experience. Assists with the implementing, leading, and monitoring Summer Camp activities.
  • Prepares, leads, and participates in recreational activities, both active and passive, for school‑age children such as games, sports, arts and crafts, and songs at an assigned day camp location.
  • Supervises and accounts for assigned participants at the day camp location.
  • Assists Program Lead as needed to ensure sign‑in and out procedures are followed.
  • Demonstrates a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic attitude with the children, parents, and camp personnel in day‑to‑day activities.
  • Acts as a liaison between the parents, children, camp staff, Program Lead, and Recreation Coordinator.
  • Attends all preseason and ongoing staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Assists in keeping the camp location neat and clean and all equipment and supplies in good order.
  • Follows District policies and procedures.
  • Follows safety procedures and renders first aid as ; responds to emergencies as they arise and follows emergency procedures; assists Program Lead to ensure that accidents and incidents are promptly documented and reported.
  • Actively encourage and live the District's mission.
  • Provide non‑biased and fair direction to Junior Leaders, and act as a role model.
  • Communicate, delegate, review, and implement planned recreational activities.
  • Conduct regular safety checks of your area, and correct hazardous situations immediately.
  • Desire to work collaboratively on a team
  • The Recreation Leader – Project HYPE position may also perform other nonessential duties as assigned.
Employment Standards

Knowledge of recreational/sports activities appropriate for school‑age children. Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, children, parents, and volunteers. Leadership and organizational skills. Ability to use independent judgment and take appropriate action to ensure children's and staff's safety. Ability to deal with emergencies and stressful situations.

  • Minimum Education :
    This is an entry‑level position. A valid work permit may be for applicants under the age of 18.
  • Minimum Experience :

    Previous experience working with children (volunteer work, babysitting, playing sports, coaching, etc.) is preferred (but not )
  • Other requirements:

    State law requires all selected applicants 18 and over must be fingerprinted and pass a pre‑employment background check. A TB test clearance is for all selected applicants. Reliable transportation to and from work. First Aid/CPR/AED Training or willingness to complete/recertify (preferred)
Licenses/Certification
  • Preferred possession of a valid class C California Driver’s license.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications are highly desired but not .
