Position Description
The Division of Hematology Oncology, Department of Internal Medicine, at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine, is recruiting for a full‑time academic leadership position in Professor In‑Residence, Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine (Clinical X: Clinician‑Investigator), or Health Sciences Clinical Professor (HSCP: Clinician‑Educator) series at the Associate or Full Professor Rank. Faculty in the In‑Residence series are expected to engage in teaching, independent research and creative work, demonstrate professional competence and activity, and provide University and public service.
Faculty in the Clinical X series are expected to engage in professional competence and activity, teaching, research and creative work, and University/public service. For the Clinical X and In‑Residence appointments, the applicant must have the ability to develop and implement investigator‑initiated research, obtain extramural funding, and conduct collaborative science as a team member and leader. Typically, more research effort is allocated to faculty in the Clinical X and In‑Residence series, dependent on performance and funding.
Faculty in the Health Sciences Clinical Professor series are expected to engage in teaching, professional competence and activity, scholarly or creative activities, and University/public service. For the HSCP appointment, the applicant must have the ability to make significant contributions to research teams.
The successful candidate will be a physician‑leader who will serve as Chief of the Division of Hematology Oncology. This recruitment is conducted only at these ranks and the resulting hire will only be at the Associate/Full rank.
The Chief provides the vision and administrative leadership for the Division’s clinical services, educational programs, research enterprise, and is responsible for budget and resource allocation. The Chief will be directly involved in teaching, research, and clinical service in their recognized area of expertise. Scholarly focus in classical hematology or solid tumor oncology is particularly sought. The Chief will be expected to provide leadership by strengthening the Division’s clinical and research endeavors in the face of the rapidly changing healthcare and research funding landscape, building strong interdisciplinary partnerships within the School of Medicine and across the schools and colleges at UC Davis, and provide leadership within the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, while providing strategic planning with other UC Davis Health and community providers.
For consideration to the In‑Residence or Clinical X series, a record of publication in peer‑reviewed journals is required. Evidence of success in obtaining extramural funding and/or administering clinical trials is highly desirable for these series as well.
The division includes 38 clinical and research faculty, five associate physicians; 13 fellows; 11 advanced practice providers; and numerous administrative, financial and research staff. The division operates a large and diverse clinical and research program. The division is a major component of the NCI‑designated UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center and has a strong presence in the national cancer clinical trials cooperative groups.
In 2026, the SWOG Operations Office will move to UC Davis. The division research portfolio is particularly broad and spans laboratory‑based early translation to population sciences and health outcome disparities and has consistently the most extramural funding of any division in the Department of Internal Medicine. The fellowship program has expanded and developed career pathways built on our tradition of producing outstanding clinicians to launch more fellows into academic careers.
The UC Davis School of Medicine is in the top quarter of US medical schools for NIH funding and has a Clinical and Translational Science Awards hub since 2006.
