Under the general direction of the Vice President of Instruction and the assigned Associate Vice President, the Dean performs duties in the administration and supervision of the instructional area including all program administration, hiring and training, enrollment management, facilities use and maintenance, instructor assignments, staff development, schedule development, faculty and staff evaluation, facilitating curriculum development and evaluation, budgetary recommendations, and administration of day, extended day, weekend and summer offerings.

The Dean promotes student learning within each of the departments and programs through sound administrative practices and the creation of an equitable and inclusive environment that promotes academic rigor, fosters instructional innovation, and provides comprehensive support services to students.

The academic disciplines which the Dean of Manufacturing, Construction & Transportation supervises include:
Automotive Technology, Automotive Collision Technology, Design Technology, Diesel Technology, Electronics, Electrical Trainee Program, Energy, Horticulture, and Welding. This position oversees programs at satellite campuses where presence is necessary.

Typical Duties

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to:

LEADERSHIP/COORDINATION
  • Providing leadership and direction in the coordination of scheduling, facility oversight, and ordering equipment each semester.
  • Coordinating the use of instructional facilities and evaluating off-campus facilities in support of the Area programs.
  • Supporting faculty and staff in seeking external funding to strengthen Area programs.
  • Providing leadership for the continuous development of specialized Area programming.
  • Fostering a culture of completion which encourages degrees, certificates, job preparation and transfer.
  • Resolving student, staff, and faculty concerns and conflicts using conflict resolution techniques.
  • Functioning as the first line administrator in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of assigned instructional programs and services.
  • Supervising department chairs, coordinators, and faculty in assigned instructional programs including off-site facilities.
  • Supervising staff in assigned programs.
  • Coordinating the faculty and staff selection process including developing and reviewing selection criteria, recruiting, screening, interviewing and recommending within areas of responsibility.
  • Providing administrative leadership in the development and management of the budget in areas supervised.
  • Developing and managing appropriate grant activities and opportunities.
  • Providing leadership for partnerships with secondary and adult schools, including Dual Enrollment and Articulation.
  • Coordinating with the college safety officer to ensure that hazmat, state, and federal safety and compliance requirements are maintained.
  • Providing leadership and direction for outside accrediting procedures, including accreditation from the National Automotive Technical Education Foundation.
COLLABORATION/TEAM BUILDING
  • Facilitating articulation of Area programs with other institutions.
  • Serving as a liaison between Area departments and multiple internal and external agencies.
  • Facilitating communication between the Area and the college at large and coordinating Area programming and services across the college such as Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS), Counseling, Learning Communities, etc. to address the needs of students.
  • Working cooperatively with the administrative team in support of college goals and serving on teams, committees and work groups as appropriate.
  • Facilitate conversations around innovation, new program development and use of technology.
PROJECT DOCUMENTATION/DELIVERABLES
  • Providing facilitation and guidance in the establishment and evaluation/assessment of student learning outcomes to determine the effectiveness of student learning in this area.
