What is a teacher in training?

A teacher in training is someone who is formally developing their teaching skills and practices. Teachers in training conduct their work while enrolled in teaching programs to earn teaching degrees and credentials. These programs typically require a minimum of one semester of training before graduating. Training programs offer an opportunity to practice teaching a class with the support of experienced educators.

What does a teacher in training do?

A teacher in training conducts many of the same tasks that teachers do while under the supervision and guidance of a skilled professional. They can train to teach different levels of education, such as elementary, middle, high school and college. At each level, a teacher in training's duties involves similar activities, including:

  • Collaborating with other teaching professionals
  • Communicating with students' parents or guardians
  • Creating lesson plans and materials
  • Grading student work
  • Preparing labs or other interactive learning activities
  • Teaching lessons

Responsibilities/Duties:

Essential Functions:

  • Plan, organize and implement daily lessons in accordance with the approved curriculum
  • Conduct pre and post-assessments using standardized assessments for each student
  • As a part of a team, write and implement goals as outlined in each student's IEP
  • Implement Capitol’s unique school wide behavior management program
  • Demonstrate competency in all subject areas
  • Provide direct, small group, and one on one instruction
  • Provide academic assessments
  • Participate in IEP meetings
  • Meet special education timeline requirements as specified by education code
  • Meet Capitol Schools timeline requirements
  • Participate in trainings, school events, and meetings
  • Maintain documentation of communications with students, families, and other services providers
  • Maintain documentation of daily activities
  • Complete reports and forms as required
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Minimum Qualification, Job Experience, Knowledge,

Skills And Abilities

  • BA
  • Applicants with a completed CBEST will be prioritized
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, in addition to a variety of educational software programs
  • Excellent reading and writing Skills
  • Organizational skills
  • Ability to meet required Program deadlines
  • Ability to work with a diverse student population
  • Ability to work in a team environment
