Position Summary: Under general supervision of the Associate Director of Academic Advising, the Academic Advisor II is responsible for providing general advising for first‑time freshmen, second‑year students (specifically those on academic probation), and General Education and graduation requirements for transfer and continuing students. The incumbent must be sensitive to the needs of a diverse student population. The Academic Advising Center offers current students advising on General Education and Graduation Requirements, and engages students in a developmental process that helps clarify and implement individual educational plans consistent with their skills, interests, and values.

FLSA: Exempt (Not eligible for overtime compensation)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,083 per month (minimum of the classification salary range)

CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,083 per month – $7,228 per month

Salary Grade/Range: 1

Recruitment Type: Regular (Probationary)

Time Base: Full-Time

Pay Plan: 12 months

Work Hours: 8:00am – 5:00pm, M‑F, with occasional hours as needed. Summer hours are 7:30am – 4:00pm.

Department Information: The Academic Advising Center offers mandatory freshman and transfer orientation, mandatory freshman advising, and general education and graduation requirement advising for all students, engaging them in a developmental process that helps clarify and implement individual educational plans consistent with their skills, interests, and values. Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities: Working knowledge of practices, procedures and activities of the program; general knowledge of organizational and program management; research and interview techniques; principles of individual and group behavior; ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness; plan work assignments; gather and analyze data; advise students individually and in groups; recognize multicultural, multi‑sexed and multi‑aged value systems;

establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies, and others; demonstrate decision‑making ability with implications for other program or service areas.

Experience: Equivalent of two years of professional experience in a student services program area or related field; skills and competence that show potential for growth. A master's degree in a job‑related field may substitute for one year of professional experience.

Education: Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university in behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job‑related field. Specialized experience may substitute for required education on a year‑for‑year basis.

Required Qualifications
  • Experience in a higher education setting (e.g., advising, admissions, student programming or development).
  • Experience working with students from various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, including those considered at risk.
  • Ability to independently prioritize, plan, and organize work in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to provide direct services to a diverse student population.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of students, faculty and the general public.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in a diverse environment.
  • Ability to compile, prepare, write and review reports.
  • Proficiency using standard office software packages (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Familiarity working with university‑based record/data systems/software (e.g., People Soft).
  • Ability to understand, interpret and apply moderately complex rules, policies, regulations, and procedures.
