Lecturer Pool – Social Work

The School of Social Work at Sacramento State is one of the largest accredited social work programs in California. Our faculty and staff are dedicated to training a highly diverse student body to prepare the next generation of social work professionals for our region and beyond. The School prepares ethical and competent generalists and specialized social workers who can lead and serve our rich and intersectionally diverse communities in the development and delivery of psychosocial and clinical services that contribute to human wellbeing and social justice.

Part‑time lecturers are instructional faculty with conditional appointments based on enrollment and budget. Duties include delivering instruction, preparing course materials, assessing student learning, and holding office hours. Courses occur throughout the week, on weekends, day or evening, and may be offered in person or online. Additional duties may be assigned based on departmental needs. Course assignments, including dates, time, and modality, are made by the Department Chair under the direction of the College Dean.

• Generalist practice (BASW or MASW)
• Advanced graduate‑level practice in behavioral health, health & aging, or children and families
• Field (practicum) supervision
• Macro practice, including administration, supervision, community organizing, and policy practice
• Advocacy
• Program evaluation and grant writing
• Psychodiagnosing (using DSM‑5‑TR), substance use disorders, forensics
• Statistics
• Social science research methodologies, including experimental (quantitative) methods and qualitative traditions
• Social science and critical theories, in particular human behavior and the social environment (HBSE)
• Cultural diversity, social justice, power/privilege/oppression
• U.S. social welfare policy
• Practice with specialty populations (e.g., Veterans, LGBTQ+ communities, international settings, gerontology, neurocognitive and developmental disabilities)

Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background and are determined by the hiring department. Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank. As of July 2024, the classification salary ranges for the respective ranks are:

• Lecturer A: $5,507 – $6,677
• Lecturer B: $6,221 – $13,224
• Lecturer C: $6,825 – $14,523
• Lecturer D: $8,593 – $15,211

These ranges are based on a full‑time rate of 15 weighted teaching units (WTUs). Compensation is prorated based on the units taught and paid in six equal checks per semester.

• Master of Social Work (MSW) or an equivalent graduate degree in social work or a closely related field such as MSSW, MA/AM in Social Work or Social Welfare, MA/MS in Sociology, Economics, Psychology, Public Health, or Feminist Studies.
• A minimum of two years of post‑MSW professional practice experience.
• For select undergraduate practice or field seminar courses:
  Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and a minimum of five years of post‑BSW relevant practice experience. Candidates with only a BSW should address this in their cover letter.

• At least five years of post‑MSW professional practice experience, especially relevant for teaching graduate‑level practice courses.
• License or credentials such as:
  • LCSW in California or an equivalent clinical license from another state
  • Pupil Personnel Services Credential (PPSC) in California
  • NASW credentials (ACSW, DCSW)
  • Board Certified Diplomate (BCD) or similar from a recognized credentialing body
