Assistant Engineer – Civil (Level I / Level II)
Class:
Assistant Engineer – Civil (Level I & Level II) – Continuous filing exam.
Pay:
Level I – $7,057.44 – $7,781.25 per month;
Level II – $8,491.17 – $10,836.72 per month.
Next filing cut‑offs: 10/6/2025, 1/5/2026, 4/6/2026, 7/6/2026, 10/5/2026, 1/4/2027. All applications must be received by 5:00 p.m. on the posted cut‑off date.
Responsibilities- Perform field and office engineering assignments related to the design, surveying, testing of materials, and construction of public works projects.
- Assist in planning, designing, and maintaining civil engineering projects such as roads, bridges, traffic control systems, drainage, water and wastewater systems, airports, and building construction and remodels.
- Graduate from Level I (trainee) to Level II (journey) after demonstrating increased proficiency during the training period.
- For Level II: direct routine office or field projects of average difficulty to completion and provide technical direction to subordinate personnel.
- Principles of physics and mathematics applied to civil engineering.
- Topographic and construction surveying, stress analysis, mechanics and material properties.
- Common methods and equipment in engineering construction and inspection methods.
- Real property descriptions; hydraulics and pumps.
- Civil engineering design and drafting methods and equipment.
- Make accurate computations and keep neat, accurate field notes.
- Prepare technical reports.
- Maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from a civil engineering curriculum accredited by ABET, or
- Current Engineer‑in‑Training Certificate issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
- Valid Driver’s License, Class C or higher, required upon appointment.
- Potential requirement for health and safety certification within two years of hire.
- May be required to complete 45 hours of continuing education every three years.
- Physical abilities: sit for extended periods, stand, walk, use office equipment, perform drafting, occasionally walk on uneven terrain at construction sites.
- Work may exceed 40 hours a week and may involve irregular hours during emergencies.
- Background check and fingerprinting required if accepted to an appointment; felony or misdemeanor convictions that impact job duties may be grounds for ineligibility.
- Some incumbents may need an airport security badge for secure airport locations.
