Job Overview
Assistant Engineer – Civil Level I/II are responsible for a variety of civil engineering work in connection with the design, surveying, testing, and construction of public works projects such as roads, bridges, traffic control systems, drainage, water and wastewater systems, airports, and other structures.
ResponsibilitiesLevel I incumbents perform field and office assignments of a less complex nature in connection with the planning, design, construction and maintenance of civil engineering projects. They gradually take on more difficult assignments and may assist experienced engineers. Level II incumbents are responsible for routine office or field projects of average difficulty under general supervision and may serve as a resident engineer on smaller construction projects.
The duties of both levels include:
- Design, surveying and testing of civil engineering projects
- Preparation of reports and field notes
- Collaboration with engineering and paraprofessional personnel
- Application of engineering principles to problem solving
- Principles of physics and mathematics used in civil engineering
- Topographic and construction surveying, stress analysis, mechanics and properties of materials
- Common methods and equipment in engineering construction and inspection
- Real property descriptions
- Hydraulics and pumps
- Civil engineering design and drafting methods and equipment
- Make accurate computations and maintain neat field notes
- Prepare reports
- Maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and the public
- Graduation from an ABET accredited civil engineering curriculum; or
- Current Engineer-in-Training Certificate issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
- Valid Driver's License, Class C or higher
- Required certifications and licenses as specified by the County
- Completion of at least 45 hours of continuing education every three years (if applicable)
- Sit for extended periods, stand and walk frequently
- Manual dexterity and eye‑hand coordination for office equipment and drafting
- Corrected vision for drafting and map review
- Occasional walking on uneven terrain at construction sites
May be required to work more than 40 hours per week and/or irregular hours, particularly during emergency situations.
