Assistant Engineer – Civil Level I/II
Position Summary: The Assistant Engineer – Civil Level I/II is responsible for a variety of civil engineering tasks related to the design, surveying, testing of materials, and construction of public works projects, including roads, bridges, traffic control systems, drainage, water and wastewater, airports, new building construction and remodels, and other structures.
Responsibilities- Assist with field and office assignments of varying complexity, including planning, design, construction, and maintenance of civil engineering projects.
- Conduct surveying work and laboratory testing of construction materials.
- Prepare engineering drawings, reports, and field notes.
- Coordinate with other engineering disciplines and project personnel to ensure project requirements are met.
- Provide technical direction to subordinate engineering and paraprofessional personnel as needed.
- Serve as a resident engineer on smaller, less complex construction projects (Level II).
- Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and quality standards.
- Principles of physics and mathematics applied to civil engineering problems.
- Topographic and construction surveying; stress analysis and material properties.
- Common methods and equipment in engineering construction and inspection.
- Real property descriptions.
- Hydraulics and pump design.
- Civil engineering design and drafting methods and equipment.
- Accurate computation and preparation of field notes and reports.
- Effective communication and relationship building with coworkers and the public.
- Graduation from an ABET–accredited civil engineering curriculum, or
- Current Engineer‑in‑Training certificate issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
- Valid California Driver’s License, Class C or higher.
- Ability to obtain required certifications within two years of hire.
- Completion of at least 45 hours of continuing education each three years.
- Physical ability to sit for extended periods, stand, walk, and use office equipment; optionally perform site work on uneven terrain.
