Job Summary

The Comm and Network Technical Analyst IV, Senior VoIP Engineer possesses knowledge and skills of subordinate Comm and Network Technical staff Grades 1 through 3, and is the recognized expert in Voice Services of UCDH. Under general direction, the Senior VoIP Engineer provides technical leadership and is responsible for architecture, design, configuration, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Voice Services technologies across new constructions and renovations.

The role requires strategic decision‑making that affects the entire UCDH, leading to capacity planning, traffic engineering, and the design of enhancements to the voice and data network architecture. The Senior VoIP Engineer works with internal departments and external vendors during project scope definition and design phases, applying advanced professional communications concepts and industry best practices to resolve highly complex issues.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Hold a valid California driver’s license.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related technical area or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of technical experience with VoIP technologies.
  • Advanced experience with large enterprise voice communications and network systems.
  • Experience maintaining enterprise VoIP architecture and design.
  • Experience maintaining Cisco (UCCE/PCCE), (CUCM), (UCCX), Auto Attendant, Unity Voice Messaging, and VoIP gateways.
  • Experience gathering customer requirements and providing technical recommendations.
  • Experience maintaining large Private Branch Exchange (PBX) systems and integration with CUCM and Unity.
  • Experience configuring large network dial‑plans, calling search spaces, and device pools.
  • Experience with VoIP ACD systems and Auto Attendant scripting.
  • Experience with network hardware platforms, protocols, and software, including OSI layers.
  • Strong problem‑solving and organizational skills, capable of managing multiple projects.
  • Excellent communication skills with technical and non‑technical personnel.
  • Self‑motivated, capable of working independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certifications in related VoIP technologies.
  • 10+ years of technical experience.
  • Experience supporting large enterprise voice networks such as CUCM, Unity Voice Messaging, E911, Cisco UCS, UCCX, and PCCE.
  • Experience with Call Center software suites (e.g., Calabrio, 2

    Ring) and large Cisco VoIP Unified Communications systems.
  • Experience with NEC Fusion PBX systems.
  • Experience solving complex communication hardware and software issues.
  • Experience gathering and analyzing data for functional assignments.
  • Experience communicating technical information across all organizational levels.
  • Experience interpreting manufacturing manuals and performing corrective actions.
  • Experience managing large projects and meeting critical deadlines.
  • Experience documenting technical systems and developing work plans.
  • Advanced knowledge of professional communications and network systems, including OSI layer protocols.
  • Understanding of VoIP Services impact on all medical center operations.

Part of UC Davis Health Information Technology, Unified Communications provides planning and implementation for WAN, LAN, VoIP, Call Center technologies, wireless, email, voicemail, and workstation services across the UCDH enterprise.

Department Specific Job Scope

The Senior VoIP Engineer will resolve daily Voice Services issues arising from IT Facilities Implementation team alerts and escalations, working with the IT Security Team, project managers, and other staff to address voice and data network performance and monitoring concerns.
